I read in a post (http://forums.bf2s.com/viewtopic.php?id=37945) a couple weeks back that you can run the game in a window vs. full screen and it improves your frame rate.

Two questions:

1. Can anyone validate that statement?
2. If it does improve frame rate how do you run BF2 windowed?

The primary reason I ask is that whenever a server loads, I'm very laggy for the first round and usually one of the last to join the game. The lag eventually clears up, usually by round 2 and I'm good to go after that and I'm usually one of the first in the game after that.  If I didn't have the lag problem I would play more servers that had map rotation but unfortunately they load new maps every 2-3 rounds so I stick to the fixed servers.

Any advice would be appreciated.

Can't validate it, but look here: http://www.tweakguides.com/BF2_1.html. It will tell you now to tweak your video settings for best performance.

I'm not sure, so you'll have to wait for confirmation by someone, but in you shortcut there is somewhere: +fullscreen 1, if you change the 1 in a 0 (or just delete this little part) you should get it windowed. You'll have less trouble alt tabbing to other programs, but no idea about the framerate.
You can test it yourself of course by trying with and without fullscreen.

Thanks De.

I don't follow on where I do what you suggested "+fullscreen 1, if you change the 1 in a 0 (or just delete this little part)". Can you give me more details?

In the shortcut you click to launch the game...change the 1 to a 0.  Right-click the shortcut and go to properties.  In the 'target' line, you'll see what we're talking about.

I haven't actually compared FS and windowed in BF2, but I know that in games in the past, I did see better performance in windowed mode.  The point at which this will suck though, is if you're used to playing FS on a big monitor, but at low resolutions.  When you go windowed, it'll be smaller.  Like, if you had a 19 inch monitor, running 1600x1200 for your desktop, but have to game at 1024x768.  That small of a window might not be worth any performance gain you may see.

You have said that you get lag during the first round, but presumably not the second.
This does not sound like lag caused by a graphics card, it sounds like lags caused by not enough memory being RAM and too much being pagefile. Do you have 2Gb or RAM?

Try running this console command to see what FPS you get. The number is in red in the top left corner. Anything above 30 means you are not getting lag caused by your GPU.

renderer.drawFPS 1

I would guess that your FPS will not change that much during the round, or on the second round.

You could use this command to test the full screen Vs windowed FPS yourself.

Hope this info helps dude.
