I haven't looked into it because it was so expensive, but I'm just about ready to rent a ranked server... but got a question. Can I disable BF2:SF unlocks and only SF unlocks? Personally I feel that BF2 has enough balance issues as it is that EA should have fixed but I was willing to live with for the time being, but all this new stuff is throwing it completely out of whack... and I might be interested in putting together a Vanilla BF2 only server.

So simple yes or no, please.

well, what you can do is rent a server, but just not have it upgraded to the 1.12 patch. play BF2 version 1.03. most server rental companies will ask what programs you want installed on it...so if you tell them that, id imagine it would work.

the only problem is, im not sure how many people play 1.03 anymore.

I've been told elsewhere the the new patch is madatory for ranked servers and you can't disable SF. So I guess that's that... they just lost a potential renter due to their Nazi marketing.

If you ever do go through with it make sure you shop around. Sometimes the cheapest ones are cheap for a reason. I made the mistake of going through ArtofWarCentral and did not have a good experience. Also don't even bother if you don't think you can get people to get on the server. I believe now that you have to have at least 10 people on a server for the game to start. This is mandatory for all ranked servers since 1.03. Your server could just be a revolving door that people walk in and walk out of because there's no game going.

Yea I'm aware of how hard it is to get people to join a server, I've operated a BF1942/DC and CS:S having no people in the servers is a self destructive cycle of "well noone is in there so I won't go in and wait 2 minutes." Nice thing about CS:S is if you put it so that there are 5 or so bots in there at all times you almost always get a decent population in no time, and the bots get kicked as it fills up.
