My friends computer is coming to me to be rebuilt and im installing the demo for him to try, does it need patching to 1.3 to play online or is it good to go from first instal?

I don't think the demo needs to be patched.
I dont think you can patch the demo can you?
To the extent of my knowledge, Demos are not patchable. Demo is as is, if he wants to experience the joy of 1.3 (and soon to be 1.4), he'll need the full version.
