It's sort of like giving someone a cyber cookie and saying that's great. It really serves no purpose unless you're a karma whore.
You karma someone if they give a helpful/funny post...
When you make 10 posts you can karma someone.

it is a way to comment positivley on someones post, so if you think that the post they made is helpful, funny, or something you like, you can tell them by giving them +1
