Hope this helps.
The best way to uninstall old drivers and install new (thanks to www.mvktech.net):
1. disconnect from net.
2. disable antivirus
3. uninstall current video driver (remove Nvidia from add/remove programs in controlpanel).
4. reboot
5. as the reboot comes, after the quick memory test/HD recognition, hit F8 and enter safe mode.
6. Win XP safe mode will autodetect new hardward and ask to install driver. Cancel.
7. run Driver Cleaner Pro (www.drivercleaner.net) with filter for Nvidia.
8. quit and repeat step 4 and 5.
9. install new video driver 91.31.
10. reboot.
11. start antivirus and connect to net (reboot if nessesary). This is the best way to completely remove an old driver and install a new.
12. install DirectX.
13. install overclock tool Coolbits (www.laptopvideo2go.com/nvtweak) (not needed unless OCing).
14. reboot.
15. Install monitor driver.
You're good to go.

I have an XFX 6800GT,
I have clocked it about 15% and have had only one issue.

I had a really lame issue with Warlord, where it leaked memory with the 91.31 drivers. It was only on that on map, and rolling back the drivers fixed this.

Other than that, not sure.

Ok. That even sounds more safe. I normally do all that, but dont go into safe mode, or disconnect from net. Youre way seemes even safer yet.

My system specs:

Win XP
XFI Sound
3500+ 64 CPU
2 gig ram
MSI main
80 gig hard
6800 GT OC

If I roll back to 81.xx it works better but not perfict. Once in a while I will get a video stutter, and while its doing this the speakers crackel. If I restart the comp. The problem goes away.

Also, with the 91.31 drivers I notice a frame rate loss. Id just keep my old drivers, but newre games like oblivion dont like the older drivers, but who wants to change drivers every time you change games...

+1 thanks for the info ill try this to the letter...

I am still using 84.21 drivers with my OC'd 6800 because i'm too lazy to update. I have 3 Nvidia cards and i've never had a problem with them or the drivers. There used to be a program called something like Detonator Destroyer that completely removes Detonator drivers.

Im kind of glad with ATI now, not so many buggy drivers that break or fix something every update.. >_<
