Try throwing a rock from a stand-still 'standing' position, and then try running and then lobbing it forward. The overall distance will be more. Its called "momentum". (As I now see has been mentioned above.)
Conditions of circumstance: the rules applying momentum and throwing items of the trade are not the same in baseball as they are in warfare. There is no formal "throwing etiqute" or rules for throwing in the military. If you can use one hand to throw and one to detonate before it hits the ground or whatever, its fair game, as you concur.
Point being that baseball players and their projectiles are a poor reference for a momentum example. Wrong players, different projectiles and circumstances.
