I am going for an eye checkup so that the docs can see my floaters. Anyone knows whats that machine called to look inside my eye? Is it painful?

Extremely painful, small razorsharp needles poking into your eye with electric current to measure what thickness of glass you need in your new glasses !

Or not at all really, it maybe the least painful you can do being in the same room as someone with the Dr. title

Nah, everything will be fine.

Normally, they'll give you a few eye drops.  A numbing solution, and then a solution that will dilate your pupils.  The dilating solution stings a bit, but that goes away after a while.  They'll leave you be for about 15-20 minutes while your eyes dilate, and then they will look into them with a special horizontal microscope machine.

You just stare staight ahead while resting your chin on the machine, and they do the rest.  It might be a bit uncomfortable since they will be shining a light directly into your eyes and will be telling you to look at stay looking in different directions, and if you can't stop blinking or squinting because of the light, they'll usually gently hold your eye open with their fingers.

After that, they'll give you their final notes, and you go on your way home.  I strongly recommend taking the dark sunglasses that they offer you, since your eyes will be dilated for a good 45 minutes after the procedure.  They won't be able to adjust to bright light for a while, and that can get really annoying.

Like Marconius said, the worst part about it is keeping your eye open as they shine a really bright light into it. It doesn't hurt, it's just...odd.

I'd like to go see an optometrist for my floaters but I've heard floaters aren't anything to worry about so I kind of live it out and wonder if it's really worth seeing him for.

I honestly don't know what caused my floaters, I never had them till I moved back to the States from Germany back in like... 2003, early 2004? I noticed them when I was sitting at a bus stop to go to my classes at a community college I used to go to and I thought they'd just go away, ever since they've been there and I've come to terms with them somewhat. They only show up during early periods of the day though, like in the morning and afternoon, come sunset and evening they don't come as apparent so I'm more able and comfortable during the day because floaters are such NUISANCES!

They occur when the vitreous humor inside your eyeball starts to detach itself from the retina.  Certain people get them, certain people never notice them or never get them at all.  The contents of the humor can also start condensing up based on your diet and other outside influences like that.  You'll get used to them...I've had floaters AND flashers since I was 3.  It's nothing serious, just annoying.

Flashers?

So floaters appear as small bits of detritus "floating" around your vision, like dark spots or extremely small shapes.  Flashers are bright pinpoints of light that occur when the liquid inside the eye actually pulls away from the retina.  So you'll be looking around, and all of a sudden there's a small pinpoint of bright "light" in your vision that lasts for about a half a second or so.  Kind of looks like a small camera flash, but is really just the rods and cones in the retina firing off at once as the retina pulls away from them.

My apologies if you only have one eye. Thought it was a joke. (....goes away with tail between legs)

floaters are actually just pieces of your reitna that come off ( or some other tissue) and are usually fine, but if you notice an increase in floaters or huge ones, it probably means your reitna is detaching or has detached... then you'd need to go to an eye doctor very quickly
