This is the post he made on gamefaqs, but he didn't get any help there:

I have a slight problem with BF2, I wonder if any of you can help me. When I open BF2 it displays the splash screen as normal and then shows the desktop, as normal. However, BF2 does not load up like it usually should. On further investigation, I open Task Manager and BF2.exe is sitting there, taking up a heck of a lot of system resources, yet the game isn't running.

The thing that makes this all the more annoying is that the game does work on my system - this just happened overnight. I've uninstalled and reinstalled the game countless times, as well as the 1.3 patch, I've even redownloaded the patch twice, just in case.

Does anyone know what the problem is, or have had it themselves and know the cure for it? Thanks in advance.

For some reason when my internet went down for two weeks. BF2 would take ages to load, even after a reinstall. I only wanted to play offline against bots. It works fine now that my nets backup.

I had that problem once, but a full re-install of the game and clear out of profiles cured it.

Did he delete his profiles as well as doing a full reinstall?

If that doesn't work, try a complete, from clean, reinstall of windows and everything.

i heard that deleting cookies helps.  is that true? if so, give it a try.
