*sigh*

Well, I don't know how they got admin rights but they have only played with the stuff an admin can do. If anyone who knows more about such things wants to get in touch with me I would be happy to learn what they might have done and (more importantly) what can be done to avoid it.

For now I have removed the sick image and reset the title bar.

I have backups of the database and will reset it to the last image (Weds last week I believe) later.

For now I wouldn't bother using the forum (as it will be reset) but if anyone with admin or mod orator rights to it could make yourself known to me (PM here pls) and I will ensure you know what you need to in order to clean up a mess like that should it happen again.

I've not read all of this thread but it's fair to say that there is general condemnation for the act and I for one despair at the mind of someone who can be bothered to invest the time and effort to so despoil somebody else's efforts. As an advert for the TOP clan I hope many people saw it and encourage TOP to clean up house.

Looking at that pic, I think what they have done is highly illegal.  I'd say that poor bastard has been walking round for days knowing a hot chicken vindaloo is waiting to come out his arse at any moment.  Its been in there so long it no longer looks angry.  Poor Bastard.

I was being sarcastic.  I was trying to point out that just because you leave your front door unlock it does not mean it's ok to go steal stuff.

no because they have removed the origional admins!
create a new forum... and how did they get admin rights... i know that jamez, spawn and elmo arent that good in forum coding... doubt that they would hack into the forums

someone should point out doing stuff like that is actually illegal ( not sure if its a federal crime in the states though) so if the owners of the site wish to they can persue action and would more than likely win with the end result ranging from time in jail to a hefty fine.
I doubt that would work...
I believe that at least in the US, it is illegal to hack a website... falls under some sort of vanadlism AFAIK. Much like how if some guy leaves his back door open, it's still illegal to go in and steal stuff.

Now then I believe Jamez and spawn all live in Europe. They probably have similar laws.
According to the whois records for the dmz website it's based in the UK, considering that the guys who did the defacing used some script kiddie tool or somesuch they probably didn't think to do it through anykind of proxy.

So, their ip addresses will have been more than likely recorded on the dmz server logs as well as the isp traffic logs.

The UK has some pretty stringent laws in regards to this, jamez or whoever did this could be in some serious trouble if the server owners of dmz gaming decide to inform the police.

If the site is in the US and the hackers are in UK. . . . . .ever heard of "INTERPOL"?

Interpol is just for crimes that involve multiple countries. If the 'hackers' were in a country other than the UK, then they would be involved, if the site owners choose to prosecute.

as i said, i doubt that spawn, jamez or elmo has 1337 hacking skills... one of them has admin rights to the forums. they got sick of the sniper community, for every action theres a reaction, and a spawn reaction is one fucking thing

I don't think they have "leet haxxorz skillz" either. So they look for sites that tell how to hack, got an exploit in PunBB or in Windows Apache, and hacked the site.

Like I said in my post above, the server is in the UK.

They probably didn't think to use a proxy, so they'll be plenty of server and isp logs to provide the police should the server owners wish to file a report.

There's a difference between hackers and crackers. Hackers crack into Fort Knox and give FedEx an order to pick up ten bars of gold, and it actually happens. Crackers exploit a small PHP glitch and reset a website.

Hopefully the SQL for the server wasn't lost, just reinstall the forums and you should be fine.

Oh, and start taking backups from now on in case the forum was lost.

Yes, that's what I figured happed. It's pretty obvious that they don't have enough braincells between them to figure out how to hack anything.
