G'day,

I'm getting kind of bored with battlefield 2 (nowadays I only play about 1 hours a night) and was just wondering...what are your recommendations for some good RTS (real time strategy) games?

Thanks,
Jack

It's a few years old now, but I really liked the C&C Generals and Zero hour games.

EDIT: are you looking for a specific sub genre? ie future? ancient? modern?

Earth 2160. Gamespot  Review here. Just awesome fun, unless your graphic card sucks. But my card can handle it and my card doesn't meet BF2 requirements.

Joint Task Force is coming out soon, the demo is fun but its not a game for the impatient.

Man I love RTS games. U should try out the following.
Age Of Empires 2, old but brilliant.
Age Of Empires 3, fantastic game but hasn't improved all that much on AOE2.
Warhammer 40K: Dawn Of War, my current favourite RTS.
Rome: Total War, brilliant game, though Shogun and Medieval are pretty good too.
Warcraft 3, check out the footman frenzy maps.

RTW is supposedly the best RTS ever which I agree with. Age of Empires 2 is old but fantastic, Medival Total war 2 is out soon so buy that causse it will be incredible.

Ahh the good ol' RTS genre.  There are some really good games out there, but it just depends on your style of play IMO.

C&C 95 and Red Alert for some traditional action, or if you can get your hands on it, Total Annihilation, always good fun .

Dawn of War for the brilliant fights and mad battles that ensue, with your commander upfront and battering away with his thunderhammer.

Or if we wanted something truly strategic, lets go for the Total War series.  Rome has to have been a favorite for me, but its definitely more fun on the higher levels.

While many miss it out, Ground Control and Ground Control 2, I love them both, and for those who are joined up to file planet, you can download the original for free! Good times!

But yeah, its all up to your style of play.  Hope it helped,

Crestfallen

EDIT: Here is the link for GC 1.  Just about 470mb of fun! Just sign up and enjoy! http://www.fileplanet.com/156136/150000 … ee-Game%5D

TA all the way, classic and still fun.

Dawn of War, good fun and some manic battles but I think the maps are far too small (in winter assault too) for the game. Only other gripe with Dawn of War is the pathfinding on armour and the inability to set decent squad formations (ergo anything that isn't a box) but that may have been sorted with the latest patch.

If you want a good set of games, go for C and C the first decade. Good selection of games dating back to the early days and includes Gens / Zero hour (in my opinion one of the best and most balenced strat games about).

Homeworld or Homeworld 2 are fun, a little daunting (takes time to think in three dimensions) and oh so pretty.

As for Rome, I love it. Only gripe with Rome is that the AI is a little weak (Can't use cav only armies effectively and often does foolish things like try to link up to their allies thus presenting a flank to you). However can be great fun if your playing with humans (peasent 'hooligan' wars come to mind, along with the age old 'flaming pigs vs dogs').

Gah! How could I forget the Homeworld series?! *bashes head* excellent set of games, especially with their haunting musical theme.  Adagio for strings always brings a lump to my throat in the first game.  Good stuff!

Go for relic games:

Homeworld (great space battles)

Dawn of War (futuristich battles with closecombat elements)

Company of Heros (WK2 > great fun but there is only a beta released yet, full game will hit stores around the 13th sept)

RELIC = GREAT FUN RTS!!!!

I've got Rise of Nations. I think it's [sort of] a sequel/prequel/parallel to Age of Empires. I've only played online a couple of times because I'm in Australia and my ping is huge. I really like playing single player though, except that the hardest level is impossible and all the others are too easy. I've played Civilization (the original, now I'm showing my age) and a more recent version as well, but Rise of Nations is the best one I've played. I got a game called Alexander the Great which was on discount and it was still way way way overpriced... as if the movie wasn't bad enough.

Be careful with that one, I'm also looking forward to Supreme Commander but I'm not getting my hopes up too high. Also, Silver is getting bored with BF2 NOW, and SC is still in development.

My suggestion: Warhammer 40,000: Dawn of War.

I'd also go for Dawn Of War. Its a bit more action packed and a little less focused on resource collection than your average RTS.
