A little while ago my GF and I got ADSL installed. I was stoked because I could play online for the first time. Trouble was (apparently) I was hogging the computer. So in order to get some quality time alone with BF2 I bought her a laptop which has wireless networking built in. This meant getting a router with wireless, but I know very little about networking and so it was a bit of a mission getting in all working (especially since I was working under duress "How long's it going to take you too get it working?" etc etc).

Finally I got it so we could both use the internet and I just figured "If it ain't broke don't fix it" even though I knew there was something in the instructions about MAC addresses blah, blah, blah..... from the specs I worked out (wrongly) that the only other house within range of the router was the old lady next door who I doubt has a computer at all. So I figured there was no need to worry about filtering MAC addresses. WRONG!

I was having trouble playing BF2, it was like I had major lag, and one game I even got kicked for high average ping on a server I play regularly with no problems. I looked at the router and the wireless light was going ape. My PC is connected via an ethernet cable so I thought my GF was D/Ling a load of crap, but when I checked her laptop it was off. I checked 'my network places' and there was not one, but two computers connected to my wireless network. WTF??? you pricks! I checked my internet usage history and found that for August we'd used over 90% of our download quota (normally luck to use half), and for September we'd used 25% and it was only the 3rd day of the month! Anyway, I kicked them off and set my MAC address filtering to stop them reconnecting.

A lesson learned....

You could've put it on WPA-PSK and made a hard password.

He made a wireless network but rather than put a password or put MAC filtering (MAC is an "address" or ID for each computer's network card in this case... he could've made it so only MAC's set to Allow Access could connect) he left it unsecured, and his neighbors leeched off his network and internet for a month.

What he said...

But then I have to type in a password every time I login, right?

Does anyone know the difference between the types of security? There are a few options WPA-PSK, 64bit WEP, 128bit WEP, WPA2, but I have no idea what they are...

BTW No I don't live in London, but if I did I'd live next door to friend

Aah, I see.

Is that why when I set up my wireless router it asks me for a 26 character encryption key?

No, Windows should save it once you connect the first time.

WPA-PSK is the most secure+easy

WEP is least secure but very easy (meaning shorter passwords)

WPA2 is very secure but a bit harder to set up

Really, just make a long password on WPA-PSK and you'll be fine. I doubt Granny's Dell laptop has the capability to crack the password.

If you set it up with 128 WEP and make it undiscoverable ...scans from other users would not find it !!

I actually found 2 other wireless networks while I was fiddling with my GF's laptop. Both ask for a password (well of course I checked, it's the right thing to do to ensure your neighbours have their network properly secured isn't it).
