You just have to use the crop tool. It's the black cross thing on the second row of tools, I think.

The crop tool will give you a box around the soldier.. if you want to select just the soldier you need to try the magic wand tool.. it will select around an object based on an algorithm. It may work depending on the contrast of the object to its surroundings.. if that doesn't work then you have to zoom and autodraw a selection using other tools (that i can't exactly remember the names of at the moment)..

Hope this helps

yeh, with that pic i would use the magic wand tool to select the background surrounding him (as it's basicly one colour, with variations) and then invert the selection so the soldier is selected. then, copy, new and paste.

if that dosnt tell you how to do summin, its probably not worth doing.

incidentally all the previous suggestions are lazy and honesly quite poor ways of cropping images. Look up how to use the pen tool properly and you'll get much crisper results.

what are you on about anyway? not like the pen tool deletes anything...

u wanna select any part of an image with any sort of precision, you use the pen tool, simple as that.

u want a general outline of summin u dont really care about the finish of then you use the lasoo

yeah use the Pen tool to create a path around the object. Zoom in on what you want, then just create points in the path eventually clicking on the original starting point to close the path. Then right click on the object inside the path and then select "make selection" i would feather the selection by 1. then go to the select menu and press invert selection, this means that you have selected everything apart from the object u want. Then just hit delete, which will then delete everything apart from the object u want.
