Typically I will fire only a few bullets and then the name will pop up, after which I know whether or not to keep firing.

Yes, few bullets somehow triggers the names to pop up.  We all know a few bullets don't really do damage in BF2 world anyway right?

if its a plane or you only have a split second your mini map isnt much good.....also if you get lucky/unlucky u give them a head shot and thats when you find out you killed a buddy

Considering the glitch with people showing up as the wrong team all the time, I'm not sure I want my name above me.  But it is a good idea to try and right some of the problems with the IFF system in BF2.

Another game I played a lot used to turn the crosshairs a different color when you where aimed at a friendly trooper.  If the glitch with showing up on the wrong team was ever fixed, turning the crosshairs to a radically different color might help cut down on direct fire TK's.

I think it has something to do with the fact that enemy's names pop up when you start shooting at them.  That is annoying, because I don't always want to give myself away, but if I sit with my crosshair on them long enough to find out I'm usually dead.

As for planes I've found it best to pull up the full map and just set it to a REALLY low opacity and keep it up the whole time so I can keep tabs on friendly vs. enemy planes/armor/etc.

About shooting test bullets and hitting someone in the head, honestly I have never had this happen, typically I shoot in the direction of the unknown (with them in my scope) but not aiming to hit them and the name still pops up. Though this is always done at great distances, so aiming right at them won't usually hit anyways, and close up I just go by model and skin to determine which team someone is on.

I think this would be a good feature, BFV has this feature, I believe it was called "Show 3D Map" activated by the Comma key. This would hightlight all flags, your team, and Ammo & Medic crates.

Shot it anyways. At worse, you get a TK penalty. :P

Anyways, I think it's meant to simulate the time it would take a soldier to visually recognize a firendly or hostile target.

Full map? You mean the one you pull up with Caps Lock? Or something else? I'm having a brain fart moment.
