microsoft has just released the price of its HD DRIVE for the 360 it cost £200, many people will have to buy this drive to play games like the new halo and so on.

that means that the current uk 360 price is £280 (full machine) + the HD drive = £480

which is £35 more expensive than the full version of the PS3 which will retail at £445 in march. (in europe)

microsoft do seem to be dropping there prices but from what i have seen on various websites its only the core machine which is having a price drop.

please give your thoughts on this, will this keep you away from buying a 360?

any 360 owners pissed off that they have to folk out another £200 to be able to play certain games?

just so people know i am a 360 owner. EDIT!
By the way, the BASIC PS3 is launching in the UK for about £550-£600. So, well, the 360 is still a lot cheaper. Just to annoy a lot of you - BUY THE WII!

I think its the fact that UK shops are going to rip us off by selling them with game bundles and only the premium PS3 (with the bigger hard drive)

Could be, but Dark Raven is always trying to make a Nintendo fan out of everyone, so it's best to disbelieve him until proven

Thanks for the info, the 550 one at play.com is the games bundle, cheaper than TDR's basic package

I know it's been said earlier up there, but yeah,  I've heard multiple times that no games will be released on the HD-DVD drive (not hard drive, as someone mis-interpreted the name).

Really, I don't see any reason to include a next-gen disc format into a game console UNLESS the games are going to take up more than a typical double layer DVD disc (approximately 9½ gigs), in which bigger storage is needed.  So Sony, as much as I don't like it (trying to stay a M$ fan) is going the smart way, by building it into their console.  Microsoft, who PROMISED that there will be no games on their next-gen disc format, are effectively limiting their expensive drive to only be in the niche market for the people who:

1. Have an Xbox360 (which right now and for some time is, despite them saying they want to get more people, JUST gamers)
2. Don't have a PS3
3. Willing to buy a peripheral (the drive itself)
4. Not mind that it won't be HD (I think I heard the cable itself will have to lower the video quality, if proved wrong I'll take this one back)
5. And give a d*** that videos will come out on HD-DVD discs

Add to all this the dumb-a** plan of Microsoft not requiring a HD in all their consoles mean, to me, they lost this generation of the war.  If it weren't for the high price of the PS3, I would be reserving it on release day.  As it is, I think I'll wait for a few must-have games to come out, by the time they release the PS3 might drop in price.

Honestly, these console companies think they can reach out beyond the gamer market to whole families are just day-dreaming.  I game all the time, my parents know it, but would NEVER want to play games themselves.  Despite what Nintendo thinks, there's no way in hell my parents'd pick up a Wiimote and jump around.  And they are "casual-gamers", in that they like playing solitare and Mah-Jong on the computer, but no more.

So please, console companies, don't say that building the first next-gen video format player into your console will get people to buy it, and ultimately the games themselves later.  If someone built a new format into a $600 Unix workstation that could only develop OS's, don't think I'll buy it to watch movies on, and to later, despite me not wanting to, develop OS's.

They said they're working 1080p into the HD DVD drive, so it should cover all the bases seeing as the system itself already does the rest.

Maybe I mis-interpreted an article (seeing as how I don't have an HD TV let alone an Xbox360), but I thought it mentioned that the cable that connects the drive to the Xbox itself will actually HAVE to lower the quality of the signal back to normal TV quality.

On a side note, I may just be thinking of the HD-standard video converter that it has, so people without HD tv's can still view it on their normal TV's from the HD port on the Xbox.

That must be it.  My brother just got one (a 360) two days ago and his TV has component video hookups, but isn't HD (like mine).  The HD cable that comes with the 360 plays it fine in non-HD video, although I haven't seen it.

The prices being posted here.  What currency is that?  Is it pounds or Euros?  If either, what does that equal in US dollars.

Some earlier posts said the price for the PS3 was not announced in the U.S.  This is not true.  I work at a game retail store and tell at least one person every time i work what the price will be.  The U.S. price for the PS3 will be $500 and $600.  Yes, they are doing the same concept that Microsoft did, sell a premium and stripped version.  As of right now the only difference between the two are one system comes with a 20G hard drive and the other comes with a 60G hard drive.  Also, the better version has blue-tooth which will allow for wireless connection between the system and a PSP (for those who actually have one).

I have not heard of the 360 being more expensive than the PS3.  In the U.S., i know the price has not moved since its debute last year.  I highly doubt Microsoft will increase the price, but more decrease the price to compete with the debute of the PS3.

My personnel opinion, I believe Nintendo's new system the Wii will win the legendary console wars this year.  Nintendo has a new innovative way to play video games besides from just working your thumbs.  The price is right selling at $250.  Also, one its biggest selling factors is it will allow owners to download the old nintendo games from NES, SNES, N64, also nintendo got the rights to Sega so that also includes the Sega Genisis and possibly the other games from sega's consoles.

You turn on the settings on your 360 console and it will be in HD.  But you can apparently use the cables with non-HD tvs (TVs with component video type hookups, but aren't HD) and turn the settings for HD off on the 360.
