exit out of zone alarm and any other firewalls before you start the game.

I use it and i turn it off when playing cant really see why you would want it running during the game

Hu?! I run ZoneAlarmpro and haven't experienced any problems?! Any details of you firewall settings?!
But I guess it has nothing to do with ZoneAlarm as there comes no message from ZoneAlarm.

Yop ,

I found the problem !
After installation of  patch1.4 , I had first a message from Zone Alarm about new BF2.exe program.
I click on "Authorized" and " keep this for all attempt". But, I saw , during the second time I wanted to play that the message did'nt appear but was masked by the game intro !!!
Impossible to do"Alt+tab" to go to the desktop again and click"OK".
So I have tried to found with the mouse the right position on the screen.
Now ,it's Ok !!
NOTA : Does someone know if there's a risk to play without firewall ????
Thx all for your replies ! Karma +1

If you have no open programs that can be "exploited", there's really no risk to runnign without a firewall. Firewalls are really "only" required if you're running programs that have exploits. This includes remote access to your PC, any microsoft program, any network program (client/server) and generally anything that listens to ports.

So if you run NOTHING on your PC except BF2, and you have windows updated with the latest security patches, you shouldn't NEED your firewall while playing. Anyone trying to access your PC are just portscanning or sending random data to see if you have a specific program/port open they can exploit (which you dont if only BF2 is running).

You could get rid of zone Alarm and use something else. I use AVG and it never interviews with anything.

You can leave it on and stay protected without having to try and Alt-Tab to answer the prompts.  Just open ZoneAlarm, go to the programs tab and set it a "Low" (ie: Learning Mode) until you have played all BF2 expansion/booster pack and mods.  You then can turn it back to "Med".

[edit]Also, and no disrepect to Twist... but if ZoneAlarm is your only firewall (your PC is not behind a hardware or network firewall)...I would NOT recommend turing it off, even if you are fully patched, etc.  By default (and I'm guessing you have) Windows File and Printer sharing is enabled as well as a host of other services.  Even if BF2 is the only 'application' you have running, you may be allowing access to all the files on your HDD. Even on a fully patched machine, if you expose NetBIOS ports and such, you are going to get hit.  PM me if you need some assistance.[/edit]

Then we're back to the part about ANY MICROSOFT PRODUCT.... That is microsoft filesharing, printer sharing, etc. etc. And the part about open ports (netBIOS)..... So in essense, you DO agree with me, you just assume that people have filesharing and printer sharing etc. active, I assume people dont (probably because I dont have these active myself).

Zone Alarm = Fire Wall

AVG = Anti Virus (unless they have put out a new one with built in firewall lately)

You are 100% correct, except you are always running a program called windows!
By its very nature the windows kernel is exploitable. As are a lot of the programs that run without you really knowing about them.

As someone who is a Network security specialist here is some advise.

NEVER EVER turn off your firewall.

why did you need zone alarm anyways? if you were really 1337 you could just build your own linux firewall if you have a shitty old comp laying around. you can configre it however you want and it will work better than zonealarm. ipcop is the one i recommend, awesome and easy to set up. just pm me if you have any questions about it.

Im gonna guess you didnt set port forwarding in ZA after you patched BF.... rember the patch changes your BF.exe so ZA will block it til u tell it not to coz it sees it as a new program.

Agreed...I interpreted your meaning of Microsoft apps differently than you intended....my apologies.

Marloboroman82 ,

Of course I have already think about a hard firewall with Linux !
My prob today is to find another PC. My old one I have rebuilt for my daughter. For sure, hadr firewall is much better.
Thx for your reply anyway and have good game!
