Power Supply Upgrade

In short, my old PSU isnt strong enough to support a newer video card, i am looking at upgrading from an x800xt to an x1900xtx, and need the juice to support that. (and although my main question is regarding power supplies, i wouldnt mind listening to advice on alternative video cards, though the x1900xtx looks like it would easily tie me over for another year)

I've read a lot of posts saying many things (yes i used search before i posted this), but i would appreciate any advice anyone can give, mainly like reliability of brand name and such. I am looking around 100-140$ (US), and i think a 550/600+ watt power supply would work fine for me when i plan on upgrading the cpu/mb later from a p4 3.4 to a conroe. (no i dont plan on going crossfire or SLI, i think one video card that i keep semi updated is more than enough

Also, wtf is ESP12V, i know i need an ATX12V power supply, but wtf is all this ESP12V crap?

I don't think you can go far wrong with an Enermax PSU.

I'm using a Seasonic 600W PSU which I've had no problems with.

And as to ESP12V, not a clue?

Seasonic make great PSUs. As far as going from a P4 to a conroe, I think the conroe actually uses less power.

Yeah, the Conroe or Core 2 Duo processors I believe were developed from Intel's mobile processor architecture and so have a lower power consumption than the P4.

aye, the conroe is much lower power consumption (hence its OCing ability), but my current scenario is that i have a p4 3.4, radeon x800xt, 2 gig ram comp, and was looking at upgrading my entire system (except the optical/hard drives), but i wanted to do the video card/power supply now in a step, then maybe in a few months do the mb/processor/memory.

Although a good system at the time, the fact that my current rig is a sony vaio and the power supply they use is non ATX size, i am actually going to be sitting the new power supply to the side of the open case and running it to just the video card for now, and when i get a new case/mb/cpu/ram, i will take my new PSU and video card and move it into the new case with the new equipment.I just want some more time before i buy a new cpu/mb for some more options to come out, but i am confident that i could be happy with an x1900xtx until the fall of next year when we start seeing all of the new dx10/vista starting to make its mark (if that soon, hardware is one thing, but people making games/software that uses the hardware is another issue alltogether)

If I'm honest, I'd just wait until you can get the whole lot in one go and then do it then. I wouldn't be comfortable with a graphics card and PSU just lying on my desk where things could fall on them and stuff.

no, I have had one for a year and it just died, ok so I should get a replacement from them but its going to cost $130 bucks to ship back to england. Appart from the mine failing, the PSU is quiet, good looking, great modular cables and powerfull enough to run SLI. I don't think you should expect them all to die like mine did just from one account, but if the warenty is worthless why not go with a different company that will replace it if by chance it does fail. It sucks cause the only other PSU that has the great modular cables(aviation style) like Hyper is XION here, but as far as I can tell it is not a good quality PSU and only has a one year warenty.

I use the Hyper Type R 580W, it looks sooo sweet and has more connectors than a box full of connectors. Funky looking cables and aircraft style plugs, with ATX, SATA, 4 pin EZgrip Molex's, and adaptors for other random things.

Antec Trio 650w - Its a tad higher than the range you listed, but this one helps to cool things down in a big way.

i wouldnt be having the video card sitting out. It would be in the case. The pwoer supply would just be off to the side (and i may even try to see if i cant jimmy rig the power supply to fit into the case) I already leave my case open since it has no side vent and being a smaller case it tends to heat up quickly.

With it being a smaller case are you 100% sure it'll fit? When I upgraded I didn't even think about it but my new graphics card only jsut fits in and I'm pretty sure it's fouling up my air flow.

Just a thought.

That antec has a 120mm fan.

Using that PSU here as well, all works well and is currently supporting a 7950, a dual core cpu, 5 HDD's and a couple of LED's

And the free tool box is great for storing all the spare cables that you end up with.

okay:

1: the best way to upgrade is in steps.

2: the x1900xtx is one of the largest cards out there...make sure you have i slot free below your PCI-e slot, and a good 3-4 inches clear to the right.

3: antec/aspire is the best way to go for a PSU....hands down. i have a 520W Aspire and it runs my P4E/x1900xt/4x512mb corsiar/pimpfactors with room to spare...if your thinking about goin crossfire ever, get a 600W+ sli/crossfire ready psu...there are several out there by antec/aspire

The EPS12V simply means Extended Power Supply. It basically means the PSU will support the newer 24-pin motherboard power connectors, and also has the 4-pin and 8-pin secondary motherboard power connector.

A suggestion I recommend is that you try and find a PSU with PFC. Active is best, passive is okay, but having either is better than having none.

Not all power supplies are created equal, so the wattage rating isn't always what it seems. Stick to better brands like PP&C, Antec, Seasonic, and even the Thermaltake seem to do pretty well.

the side constraint is something i am going to have to consider, and may be a problem, I do have 2 pci slots and a pci-E slot, currently i have an x-fi in the pci and the second pci is empty, and the video card in my pci-e. I will have to see how things fit with a larger 'fatter' card, most being around 31mm thick at their thickets.

Hence the pain of my current situation. but i will figure it out;

I use a Antec Truepower 2.0 550w server class power supply. It is one of the ESP12V.

BUT there are a great deal of good quality psu around. Good luck in choosing.
