Ska > black metal.

Your analogy makes sense but you have it definately reversed. Unlike higher forms of music that require actual skill, like classical, electronica, jazz... it doesn't take much to be in a metal band, crying emo band or whatever. Learn how to scream, learn how to slap a bass, learn to string a few chords together in the dirtiest Drop C-tuned guitar, learn to bash on some drums. Not much technical savvy in most of the crap defined as "death-metal". There is some, but the majority is senseless banter.bobby177 wrote:

In a way, you have to learn to listen to it, just like how the high school athlete has to gain more experience in the game.
Classical is the NFL. Death Metal is kindergarten amateur-hour touch football with a tennis ball.

ok SLIPKNOT RULES lets put it at that =P
@DeathUnlimited - My post was not to tell the history of black metal, it was to explain why Slipknot is not black metal
@BMW - First of all - don't go saying that playing a certain kind music requires no skill unless you are talking about emo. That is really the only type of music that nearly all the musicians have no skill.
Most real metal bands have heavy classical influences...so I would put it as classical is the NFL of the 50's and metal is the NFL of the 21st century.

Paul Oakenfold, DJ Tiesto, Armin van Buuren, Above and Beyond, Chicane... are they the NFL of the 22nd century?bobby177 wrote:

I was in an alternative band for about 7 years, and have been listening to all types of music (including death metal) at a very young age. I have not actually taken a course in music, though, so my ear isn't exactly trained to pick up the mathematics of it all. But I can assure you the majority of death-metal sounds like garbage. The majority of emo is also garbage, but I don't blame their musical ineptness. I can identify that some of them actually try hard to introduce a melody and some do attempt a semblance of coherency. Emo is total garbage for the message. Death-metal, yes, alot of it is intended low-brow comedy or satire, I can respect that, but for god sakes clean up that muck. If you make a mistake nobody will care or notice. That isn't what I call the big-leagues.

Well I don't exactly know who those guys are but from what I can tell they are trance/techno artists. Explain more please.
Death metal is not a genre that focuses on technicality. But I can assure you it is more than just noise. If you want death metal that is more melodic... listen to melodic death metal lol.
Once again, it is just something you need to get used to. When you first listen to death metal it all sounds like one long loud noise. After you listen to enough, you can start to pick out the melodies just like you would in a normal song.

I believe there has to be a line drawn in the sand of what is music and what is just noise. Much like there is a difference between science and science-fiction. Closely related, but not the same.

Melodic death metal IS the other kind. It is its own genre.
I also agree there should be a line that distinguishes music from noise. For some people, that line just leans farther to one side.
This is where the line is for me, it just sounds like noise and pure crap. But to the people that like it, it sounds perfectly normal to them. Where the line is is just opinion so I guess there isn't a point in arguing over it.
Ok, what am I doing wrong with the youtube tags?

Edited version of the post you quoted pretty much sums up my opinion
Just to make a point Nicholas Barker (drummer for Dimmu Borgir) is one of the best and most highly regarded drummers in the world, pretty much noone can match his speed or ability to hold together complex rhythms. the guy is a musical legend and to attempt to dispute his ability quite frankly would just make you look dumb.BMW330i wrote:

So dont try to make out its a musical genre for the talentless, coz i can pretty much garuntee noone in anything you choose to listen to will come close to being able to play at their standard.

I listen to Miles Davis and 1000 other artists that the rest of the world can identify with... are you telling me some norwegian nutcase is better than Miles Davis, Robert Johnson, Sufjan Stevens, J.S Bach, Chopin etc.. I really wish you could look me in the face and say they don't come close to the standards of Nicholas Nobodycareser.
If he's considered the best in the world howcome I've never heard of him? According to countless sources I believe nobody really holds a candle next to Neil Peart of Rush when it comes to druming.
Here's a hint.. I've never heard of him because he plays music that nobody listens to. And nobody listens to it, because it sucks. Do the math.

And you made one critical mistake in your conversation - no radio stations play metal anymore
For a few posts there, I thought you wanted to have a serious argument instead of just saying things likeBMW330i wrote:

Actually in Montreal there are a few independant student-body stations that play all types of weird music from death-metal to Bhangra to ambient meditation (birds chirping, wind on the shores blah blah). Mostly relegated to the AM frequency.

BTW nobody listens to them? why do they shift around 150000 albums a year then?
Case and fact you've decided you dont like the music (fine) and as a result for some reason you've taken it upon yourself to dislike and create prejudices against the people that do like it just to try and validate your decision... you have issues mate

I doubt that is the case. Do the Grammy's even recognize it as a form of music (death-metal)? Metal is still widely played everywhere... I don't have qualms with that.bobby177 wrote:

Look... bad music is bad music just as a rotten apple is a rotten apple. I'm sure there are some people on this planet who like the taste of rotten apples compared to fresh ones... that's their prerogative, but the rest of the planet like the taste of fresh apples... and some don't like the taste of apples at all (people who have no ear for music or interest in it).
I hereby brand death-metal as a rotten apple with a few spots worth biting into.

Go to a shanty in southern Johannesburg and ask a resident if they've ever heard of Mozart. Chances are, yes, they know who Mozart is... they probably know who the Beatles are too. Then ask about your Nicholas Barker or whatever. Try the same in Botswana, Madrid, Manila, Calgary, Houston... doesn't matter.
150 000 out of a potential (i'm being generous) 6 million avid listeners of that genre in the world compared to 6.36 BILLION souls. Yeah I classify that as nobody listening or giving a shit about it.
Trance? Global. Everyone listens to it. Every creed, every race... it's just accesible and easy on the ears. That's just an example of a genre that clearly has evidence of superiority. Not just marketting. Trance/Electronica is the highest listened to type of music in the world by today's youngsters, making it the genre of the future. Other genres will simply be phased out... and as Globalisation is as sure as the sun rising in the East, you can bet on it.

did i forget to mention thats UK sales not global
and oh dear lord dont tell me you listen to trance and are picking an argument over this? Hell for the much part it dosn't even contain real instruments. I know a guy obsessive about it (to the point of irritating but hes a nice guy lol) he makes that kind of thing in his spare time, on a computer using nothing but samples... and does a good job of it too. "easy on the ears" isnt a phrase id associate with it either.
