What did the people of Scotland think of the movie "Braveheart"? Did it seem like an 'enjoyable patriotic history reenacment' or a load of Hollywood crap? Personally, I enjoyed it, but I'm an American (generally the target audience).
I feel somewhat justified in contributing an answer, due to my family background. According to what I've heard, alot of Scots used Braveheart as an excuse to fling about much-neglected patriotism (which irked the British to no end). Though as a connoisseur of history, I wasn't impressed with the film beyond its art value.

i thought it was a ok hollywood movie and mel gibbson playing a jock funny.
as i live not far from scotland i visit often especially edinburgh,
and one thing you notice is all the william wallace pomp ect hats, t-shirts so on.
as being english i find its the only peice of history that they can rub into us, well a little as you well know we got wallace in the end. and at least it substitues football ( soccer for you yanks ) as they never beat us at that either lol.
but summing up scotland i love the place my sister as even married a jock.
so i dont call the scottish much just wish the drop the hatred of the past.
p.s to you jocks you might have your first primeminister soon arggghhhhhhhhhh god help us.

Eh Braveheart's alright. Just another piece of small minded Mel Gibson dross (he seems to love to bash the English).
Quite frankly we're all so sick of every country failing to take us seriously that we're starting to believe the stereotypes. With all the ingrained racism from a very small but very vocal part of the English population (and a lot of subconscious racism from a larger proportion in the media) as well as every damn Yank coming over here and waxing lyrical about how their Mother's, sister's second cousin twice removed's chamber maid was half Scotch (yes we get called Scotch) takes it out of you.
Personally I have no problem with the English, I think they're a nice bunch and I'd easily rank York and London as two of my favourite cities. But when you watch a film like Braveheart, you don't ever think it's a serious piece of story telling. It's one man's crusade to laugh all the way to the bank. And continue the blatant anti-english attitude he developed between Braveheart and The Patriot.
Oh and cragzh1, forget football. We pummeled you soft southern jessies at rugby

Agree with every point here. Braveheart is good because its an action film first and foremost, the history has just been tied in with it. Although it does show a few truths about how the English bribed/killed/threatened our clan leaders etc to maintain order and do their bidding. I should know more about this being from Dunfermline (Where Robert the Bruce is buried) but I have forgotten it all. I have no hatred against the English except those shortsighted twats that want to cause trouble.chuckle_hound wrote:

I go out in Newcastle (jus over the border) all the time and have a great laugh, although the Geordies prob consider themselves as much Scottish as English. I got chatting to a guy in Edinburgh once who was out on a stag do and he thought there were gonna get a kicking for being English, to their surprise everyone was v hospitable towards em, probably because there are as many English in Edinburgh as there are Scots!!!
I like Scotland to be seperate from England but we (Wales and Northern Ireland) are all tied in so much i think economically it would be folly the try and split! I dont have the figures but its a guess!
freeeedooom
Go Scotland!!!!
It won't be long before those historically powercrazed gringos all hang their heads in shame because of their history as tyrants. Be proud to come from one of the caucasian homelands NOT known for ruining the lives of people in every corner of the world. While the scots were doing important things like inventing scotch and the party, the British were trying to sell heroin to children in China. LOL. And I come from the US, I'm familiar with this shame, we are still up to the same old shit.

To be honest I don't see the modern English as responsible for anything. Fact is that every country has a dirty secret, it's only the ones that don't learn from history and continue to repeat it that aren't right.Marinejuana wrote:

I think what hollywood does to everything erodes our ability to cope with reality. imo

@cragzh1: We aint doing to bad for a country with a tenth of your population and cash to throw at it. Now finally (for the last 10 years anyway) we've improved our grassroots and minimised our exiles our squad is on the up.
I was in Magaluf for the internationals when Scotland won 6- 0 and England won 5 - 0. We left our pub (scottish) and went to BCM square to find our English mates to watch the game with them. We were pissed carrying our flag, we walked up from behind BCM, we could see the HUGE outdoor screen, we turned the corner to find.....a see of red and white. About 200 pairs of eyes turned from the screen and looked at us....the 5 of us stared back, didnt see our mates so left. lol, we could of taken em

I am led to believe that historically Braveheart is a load of cobblers, hollywood just played about with another countries history to suit themselves.
Great film though
