and oh dear lord dont tell me you listen to trance and are picking an argument over this? Hell for the much part it dosn't even contain real instruments. I know a guy obsessive about it (to the point of irritating but hes a nice guy lol) he makes that kind of thing in his spare time, on a computer using nothing but samples... and does a good job of it too. "easy on the ears" isnt a phrase id associate with it either.
I think you're thinking of that happy hardcore 200+BPM trance... I'm talking about a more downbeat radio-friendly type (Paul Oakenfold). In any genre there are extremes, like in death-metal (i.e Anal Cunt).

Oh I'd also like to add, that is EXACTLY why trance/electronica is the music of the future. Because it doesn't require more than a few people, doesn't require bands renting lofts to play music, practice at specific hours, pay for expensive equipment. All you need is you and a computer and a good sound system with tons of sample tracks and a decent soundstage program.

Anyone can do it just as anyone can be in a band and mash on an instrument... but as you progress mastering mix programs on the computer requires a huge amount of a skill, technical ability, patience, and of course, if it is to sound good, a trained ear.

How can you say death metal requires no talent and then talk about trance. All trance takes is 1 person and some 20$ techno editing program.

Trance is not my favorite genre, I am just saying it is the genre of the future.

That Paul Oakenfold? Yeh nothing in that entire performance was un-synthesized (apart from the girls voice ofc)

Anal Cunt has nothing to do with black metal BTW

The best metal band couldnt gather a crowd like that if they tried. Check out his Creamfields concert (what was it... a million people?). And hey.. atleast it sounded like something instead of thrashing.

popularity isnt the issue at hand, never has been and has nothing to do with this at all... in fact neither does you disliking black metal or me seeing trance as "non-music"... the thing I took issue with was the fact that you had a complete inability to comment on a genre of music without also launching a charachter attack on anyone who listened to it.

And dont call it "his" i doubt he composed a single peice of the music he sampled, but alas thats also off the point again.

so if black metal is the same as rap, then it sucks.

Rap isnt music. It never was, it never will be.

I believe the topic of this thread is just black metal.... because if it was all metal then nobody would stand a chance if they argued about the popularity of metal.

You can't be serious - listen to death metal bands like Decapitated, Necropagist, and Cryptopsy. Their music is WAY more technical and complex than any electronic music. Much of electronic music is written to be danceable, so it often follows a simple 4/4 time signature, while many extreme metal bands typically make a point of including odd time signatures, multiple time changes in a single song, and syncopated rhythms.

It sounds like "thrasing" to you because you don't understand music theory.

89.5 FM WSOU (south orange, NJ...Seton Hall's Pirate Radio) plays metal.  That's how I first got into the Metal scene.

I think they webcast but I'm not sure.  College radio is your best bet to find music you wouldn't otherwise hear.

Now to explain why slipknot is NOT black metal

Here are some characteristics of Black Metal, taken from wikipedia and other various websites

  wrote:

* Lyrics that take the form of Satanic, Pagan, or occult themes which blaspheme Christianity.

    * Lyrics that celebrate the cold, darkness, forests, and other natural surroundings of northern European countries, reflecting modern black metal's origins in Scandinavia.

    * Increasingly lyrics are being penned with themes of war, misanthropy, and desolation, sometimes apocalytic, whose causes are rooted in human nature and actions.

    * Relatively thin guitar sound or relatively thick guitar sound—usually not in the middle.

    * Limited production used intentionally as a statement against mainstream music and/or to reflect the mood of the music by creating a certain atmosphere. This 'underproduced' effect is often achieved by cutting out low and high frequencies, leaving just the mid frequency range. It is often said that this was due to a low budget, but this often wasn't the case. This production style is often considered an essential element of "true" black metal.

    * Fast, repetitive, aggressive drums, often with blast beats. At other times, the drums can take a slower role usually accompanied by a very dry and empty tone—especially for the effect of the atmosphere of the music. On occasion, some groups such as Burzum and Xasthur will dispense with drums altogether in certain song segments.

    * A distinct "rasped" vocal style, a very guttural rasp, which is reminiscent of a torture. This is basically standard in every black metal, though there are exceptions, such as Primordial, who are still classed black metal without the rasp vocal. Some bands, particularly symphonic black metal bands, incorporate clean vocals, usually of a male choir sound, though this is used for atmospheric purposes.

    * Cold, dark, sad, melancholy, reflective, tragic, meditative, or gloomy atmosphere.

    * Unconventional song structures that are devoid of verse and chorus segments, and contain extended and repetitive instrumental passages, with less use of vocals than other styles of metal.

    * Less focus on dynamic rhythm than death metal. Very few black metal bands exhibit the rhythmic complexity inherent in death metal, and even if they do, they usually exhibit at least a few of the above-listed criteria if they are still generally classified as black metal.

    * Many black metal musicians adopt a "neo-medieval" costume style that may include leather, spikes, bondage gear, archaic armor and weaponry, and facial corpse paint.

    * Many black metal musicians choose to adopt stage names, typically patterned after occult and/or fantasy characters; however, this practice is not universal.
Clearly, Slipknot exhibits almost none of those qualities... which guess what... makes them NOT BLACK METAL

Well I haven't listened to them too much, but I would say it's gothic with black and symphonic elements

I'm not the biggest fan of a lot of black metal, but I do have an appreciation for it, I'm more into the death/thrash(a.k.a. War Metal) genre but I guess a lot of prople consider that black metal.  I'll admit much of it is "blackened death/thrash", bands like Destroyer 666, Conqueror, Destruktor, Abominator, and AngelCorpse.  Black/death bands like Vital Remains I like a lot too.  I don't like the direction a lot of death metal bands are going these days, especially all those American bands that sound just like At The Gates.  I used to like that now generic "Swedish" death metal sound but the bands that bastardized that sound(waaay too many to mention) kind of ruined it for me.  All I'll say about  nu-metal is that I strongly encourage to call mallcore just because that watered down hardcore has no reason to even have metal in a name describing it, and mallcore seems to be a pretty apt explanation of what it is.  I'll take Macabre, Kreator, Destruction, Sodom, Testament and Exodus over any mallcore out there wuthout a second thought.

But anyway I guess it's time to get on topic here, I just thought I'd mention more or less where I am coming from as far as metal goes.  First off I really don't see too many similarities to rap and black metal, if any at all.  As I mentioned earlier black metal is not my favorite, a big reason for this is that keyboards and synths tend to ruin it for me, I've seen Dimmu Borgir live and I thought their writing was pretty damn good but I couldn't get past the keyboards, the same with a lot of other bands like Emperor although I think Zyklon is pretty damn bad-ass.  I thought the Raise Hell album Holy Target was pretty good although I don't know what they were thinking with their other stuff.  Immortal was great to see live, they played with Krisiun AngelCorpse and Satyricon and all of them but Satyricon put on a great show.  Bestial Mockery is pretty good too, not sure if you would categorize it under black or blackened death but I like them.  Anyone that wants to know more about black metal, the book Lords of Chaos which I'm sure some of you have read has a lot of interesting information in it, the newest edition of the book has a ton of new material in it also.

I might as well conclude my post mentioning that I am in a death/thrash band also and if anyone cares to check it out we have a few tracks up here: http://www.myspace.com/gorehammervt
The recordings are a few years old and out drummer was not all that great then but we probably will not get together to record for another year or so when I finish college.

Sorry for the long pointless post but I haven't gotten to rant about metal much lately so I decided to take the oppritunity.
