just about to get a new rig a amd 4600 with a 7900gt
what i want to know is it worth me geting win xp 64 or wait for vista
i can get win xp 64 for about £100

IMO? no I wouldnt bother in all honesty. On a gaming rig it dosnt affect anything and generally causes more problems.

Well vista cant be that important. Look at all of the old versions made by microsoft. They still work fine. Vista will first be out in late 2006.

Personally I wouldn't use a 64bit OS for gaming at all... not gain in there since all games are 32bit anyway... Tests have proven, that a game played on a specific machine does run faster under 32bit Windows XP compared to the very same machine with a 64bit XP....

xp pro x64 is buggy to hell and very slow when running 32bit apps (wow64 is just plain crap). also drivers are difficult to get and some programs dont work correctly. its just a huuge trouble, for negative performance. stick with the normal xp unless you use more than 4 gigs of ram (although using pae might be better here, anyone have benchmarks?)

i'm using amd 4000+ & would never bother using 64bit windows,32bit xp pro with sp2's all i need,less bug's better app support & more stable for gaming.

I've used x64 for almost a year now, and haven't had any problems.

64-bit drivers aren't hard to get hold of (particularly if you're running big brand name components), and I've not had any trouble running any programs apart from one (which was some bluetooth software produced by an unheard-of manufacturer).

That said, there's no real need to use x64. I just wanted to try it, and it's been fine. I see no reason to go back to 32-bit, only because it'd mean a reformat. Do whatever you feel like, really.

Depends on how much memory you plan on sticking in there.

If I remember correctly, 32 bit OS can only address a maximum of 4Gb which includes the memory on your video card. If you exceed this I do believe it's something like it'll address your video card, but not all of your RAM so you think you have 4Gb RAM but windows can only handle 3Gb or something.

I may be wrong, there are a few people who who actually admin computers so they should have a better idea.
