Yes you can,  you basically have to have two copies of your BF2 folder.  First uninstall you current installation, then reinstall, install the patch that you wish to play, copy this folder, then install 1.4. 

This is basically how EA told the beta testers to install 1.4 (copy their current folder, then install the beta patch.)
