I have like 200 or so songs on my computer, and I was wondering how to move them to a new computer once I get one.

Because once we get a new computer, this old one will be trash, and we are wiping everything off the hard drives so no one can get our personal info.

You could create a network, then transfer them to the new computer, or you can place your current hard drive in the new computer, transfer the files, then place the old hard drive back into the old computer.

I was thinking about doing that second part but I'm not a computer nerd/tech, so I don't know how to do that.

I think if I just keep all my songs on my iPod, then when I install iTunes ont he new computer and plug in my iPod, all the songs would come up on iTunes, and then I could transfer them to another folder.

That will work, but you will have to transfer them from your iPod to your library in iTunes first.

Burn them onto a CD although im guessing you cant. If you got an MP3 player you could put them on there but a Network sounds good although you will need a straight networking cable which you can pick up for a few quid. BTW KEN u cant copy songs off youre i pod to a computer, u need a program like Yamipod to do that.  here you are: http://www.yamipod.com/main/modules/downloads/

Hope this helps

If the old one is trash, why not keep some of the parts (eg: Hard Drive, PCI cards, etc)?
You never know when crap like that can come in handy. Though myself, I'd make a fileserver out of it.

Memory stick

Once you have got all the songs on your memory stick insert it into your other computer and create a new folder and then drag all the songs/ other thigns you want into that folder.

It's pretty easy to use

I thought that if you plug your iPod into another PC, it has to wipe it.

To do with piracy and if it gets stolen methinks.

But, I'd either do it via the network or, if you could be bothered with the memory pen, use that (although, if you have a big memory pen, like a Gig or something, it'd be grand...)

So when I plug my iPod into my new computer, it will wipe every one of my songs? It better not, I've already had that happen once before. I plugged it in, clicked something, and it wiped all my songs lol.

When I get my new computer, I'll just plug in my iPod and transfer all the songs from there.

Thanks guys.

On a sidenote: If you really want to remover the data from the HD simply deleting it with windows won't do shit. Not even reformatting really cleans the HD out.

So if you want to make the data impossible (or at least very, very hard) to recover get some tool that overwrites everything with $00, $FF, $00+$FF or random data or even uses an intelligent deletion method like DoD II, DoD 3+7+3 or the Gutman Method.

Sorry maef, I didn't understand a word of what you said lol.

I can either get you to explain it more to me, or I can just blow up my hard drive with some firecrackers. That way, no one would ever get my personal info.

Or, if you have enough space on it, you could do what I did.  Move your entire iTunes library onto your iPod in a New Folder.  Then just unload them onto your new computer's hard drive.

Get an old network cable and use it to make a "crossover cable" You can plug this into the network card of each comp and share as if you were on a network. Your connection will say limited or no connectivity but just ignore that, You will get your usual 100meg connection speed.

all the ideas have been said already, but before u toss out that old hard drive, be sure to completely wipe it all out completely, cuz hackers can easily plug it back in and steal the data on it, and they'll know who u were, what u did, and anything u typed in, cuz hard drives record everything u do, every pic u see, every key stroke u type, etc.

if the hard drive is still good and more than 10 gigabytes, why not just make it a secondary hard drive, put it into the new pc, reformat it once u copy all ur music into the first one, and then place ur music back into the old one, that way the new pc stays nice and fast, cuz pc's slow down overtime with more stuff u put into them, but if u put stuff into the secondary drive, pc stays fast

What he is saying is that even though you "delete" or "format" your hard drive, the data can be restored with applications.  The only save way to actually "delete" information off of your hard drive is to save other bits of data over the "deleted" information.

Also, it is not that hard to configure your PC to run a second hard drive, as I stated above, all you have to do is plug it into the cable that your CD-ROM is plugged into, if your new PC has the same type of connection.  In theory, you should then be able to access both drives, if not there are jumpers on the back of your old hard drive that you can remove to make it work.

Sing them into your mike and record...

or you could open a couple of free email accounts (hotmail or g-mail for example) and email them to yourself, I think they give you like 100MB of storage for free so you could probably hold 200 songs with about six accounts.
No cost to you.  When you get your new computer just go to the accounts and save attachments.

No way guys, I want to never see my computer again. I'm not keeping any parts, nothing. It's five years old for god's sake!

If I used it in my new computer, it would just break down and cause ten other problems.
