Variable geometry wings server 2 purposes on the F-14, one is to allow the amount of lift vs speed to be altered to suit different purposes, EG. more lift for landing, and at the other end of the scale less drag for speed. (I know someone will porobably describe that in far more depth but thats the gist of it.) The second reason is that on the ground the wings can be further folded to take up less deck space.

Shame to see it go. really.

The MiG 28 (fictional - & fighters had an odd number designation anyway) from Top Gun was actually an F-5 which the actual Top Gun Programme used as "aggressor" aircraft in training, along with A4 Skyhawks.

Despite this news being VERY OLD, the Russian planes in the movie were A-5's. Not sure of the name though. Chuck Yeager was pushing a single engine variant of it for use in the Airforce called the F-20 Tigershark.

the F-14 for 30+ years have been the kings of air to air superiority. increadible speed, AIM 54 phoenix missles that can hit a plane 200+ miles away, and killer maneuverability.

the F-15 can match up to it plus its has Air to ground capabilties.

F-16 is a horrible aircraft. Made for air-to-air combat and it couldn't even do that. It's speed was slower then of an 1959 Mig-21. And dog-fighting abilities.....what dog-fighting if you can't catch an airplane?

F14 had a good run but its no longer required. Just like many military vehicles if it no longer serves a purpose or if there is something better in use then why do you need it. The Comanche got canceled thats the only one that really pissed me off.

right the commanche would have been cool but honestly cost per unit plus its capability limitation seems like a lose lose situation, apache all the way, stealth is for high mobility, not for out of range.

The F-14 is a great plane, but it cant keep up with advances in technology. Hell, the F-18s future is looking grim as well, considering the F-35 is in line to replace it on carriers. Out with the old, in with the new.
