Hey everyone,

this is my first time posting here, but this seems like the place to be for BF2 junkies like me.  well, I used to be.. my performance in the game is so bad I don't even play anymore..

anyway,  I used to play BF2 at high settings all day and night with my Geforce 6800 128mb AGP card.. but I wanted more frames in other games, so I decided to upgrade my motherboard and video card to PCI-X... and ever since then, BF2 has never been the same.

My Old system:
athlon 64 3200 2.2ghz s754
MSI K8N Neo Platnium
1GB PC3200 RAM
BFG Geforce 6800 128mb AGP
WD Raptor 37gb SATA HD
SBLive! Audigy 2zs

For the upgrade, all I replaced was the Motherboard with an EPOX EP-8NPA SLI mobo, and replaced the video card with a ATI x1800xt 256mb PCI-X.

you would think performance would double if not tripple. Well, it does in EVERY other game I play.. Farcry runs great, Toca race driver 3 runs great, UT2k4, Doom3, they all run great.. at 1027x768 and above @ High settings.

So I don't understand why this is happening. The only time is doesnt stutter is when I lower the graphics to the lowest settings.. but I shouldn't have too.. Since It played great on my old setup.

I've tried everything in the "List of Fixes" sticky related to the problem..  can anyone please help me. I will buy you anything you want

I hope to hear from someone.

Regards,

your rig seems OK, not great though, and the RAM is definitely not enough for BF2. Try adding at least half a gig and you should be able to play smoothly at medium-medium to high settings. (side question: is your pc 'clean'?)

hey thanks for replying..

see the thing is.. I played the game perfectly fine on my old setup with the same amount of RAM, and no stuttering... it's the hard drive that keeps going crazy.. but ONLY on bigger maps. smaller maps with smaller amounts of people  run fine. its very odd indeed.

I know it sounds like a RAM issue, but it ran perfectly fine before I upgraded.

So since I posted, I tried a million things

1) I renamed the bf2.exe to BF21.exe ( some poeople say this helps)
2)updated Punkbuster manualy
3)shutdown over 20 system proccesses (system feels faster)
4)checked Timedemo, and even with stuttering, my FPS hover around 60-80
5)disable anti-virus and windows firewall
6)my Ping is low (25-50)

windows was just installed fresh 3 weeks ago, defragged, spyware and virus free.  all programs are turned off when i play the game.

question.... what should my internet connection be set to within the game?  I have a cable connection that peeks at around 750kb down, 256up.  should be set to T1 Lan or 256k Cable?

I'm very close to giving up.  A game should not run worse after you upgrade.. especially when all your other games run great.

hey yall,

figured out my problem.. not enough RAM upgraded to 2gb and everything runs buttery.

could someone tell me this though... because I have upgraded my Video card and stuck with my old CPU.. is it possible my video card isnt running to its max ability because my CPU is older?  i mean it's a s754 Athlon 64 3200 2.2ghz.  How much better do I really need?

thanks for the help

hi jae,

thanks for the reply.  all my drivers are upto to date. I've tried a million different driver combinations and a million windows fresh installs to figure out which ones were best, so thank god I dont have to go through that again.

anyway, If a power supply isnt doesnt have enough juice, wouldn't the system not run at all? or could if really effect in game performance?

my power supply is the Vantec Stealth 400B

+3.3v +5v +12v -12v  -5v
26A    40A  16A  1.0A 0.8A

do you know if thats any good for my ATI x1800xt?

thanks!

HI
does your pc ever just restart since u upgraded. That is a good sign it's your power supply.

when u next buy a power supply on the 12v rail u want it to be at least 20v, the bigger the better, u have just 16v at the moment. If u do ever get a power supply u want at least 550w with 20v or more on the 12v rail.

Also have u tried single player to see how it runs. That will tell u for sure it's your system and not something else.

If i find out anymore info I'll post here

sry not anymore help,

good luck and let me know how u get on

hey JAe,

thanks again for the reply.  you know I just don't get it.  my computer is awesome except for this one game.  No restarts, no crashes, no weird messages.  everything is just perfect and quick.  even other games run really good.  my brother has a computer with the same CPU but uses an ATI x800 pro, and it runs perfectly, even with 4x Anti-Aliasing on!... mine on the other hand, runs like shit with a ATI x1800xt.  I've come to the point of giving up, and waiting for BF2142, which hopefully I'll be able to play.  I just don't think BF2 and my computer get along.  I blame it on the Nforce4 chipset.  I've done more than enough to try and resolve the issue.   Thanks EA.

Just Wondering in what order is did you install windows? i.e. windows OS, Updates, Drivers etc.
Also how is your Drive set out i.e. do u have two drives, two partitions?

Next Have you overcocked your PC at all?

Ps i did have the same problem.

hey R3v4n,

please tell me how you fixed the problem?

I installed a Fresh copy of Windows, Updates, Then Drivers.

My Hard Drive is one partition

and my PC is overclocked, but I tried playing with CPU and Video at stock speeds and I still had the same problem.

I was playing BF2 Perfectly on my old PC with a crappy Geforce 6800, I should have never upgraded... Although  all my other games run much better now. ARG
