hey u know thay might have something better coming soon
F18 is obviously better than the F14 especialy when it comes to repairing. 4 hours of repair on an F14 vs 1 hour for the F18. Soon that will be replaced with the F35.
I morn more for the loss of the a10, rather then the f14.....
But I guess in the end, everything has to go, all good things must come to an end...

It needed to happen, but its unfortunate.
I cant wait for the next generations, though

well heres some bad news, in 2007 when the F-35 A's B's and C's come out, say good bye to your (and my) beloved plane*TS*tphai wrote:
f-14 is nice its sad to see a aircraft get taken out of servce...any aircraft! Personaly i hope the f-18 never gets taken out it will in time but its a great aircarft
oh and the A-10 isnt supposed to go out of service till like 2015 or something, or until we find something better, its got badass armor and can carry almost and weapon in the US arsenal, so dont say good bye just yet
you must not know much about planes, or F-16's in general, because 1. the F-16 was the best fighter in the world before the F-15 came, and 2. it wouldnt be in service anymore if it was that shitty. GGSinyukov wrote:

F-16 is a horrible aircraft. Made for air-to-air combat and it couldn't even do that. It's speed was slower then of an 1959 Mig-21. And dog-fighting abilities.....what dog-fighting if you can't catch an airplane?
Im going to make a petition to bring back the F-4.
There was a post on this exact topic about 2 months ago. The reason the F-14 is being put out of service is due to the high costs to maintain it, and the fact that it's role is being filled by other aircraft doesn't help. Israeli army and a few others still use it though, so it's still alive.
The f-16 is the best fighter for the buck when you look at production costs and maintenance. Cheap and effective in numbers. The Israelies proved it's effectiveness when they bombed an Iraqi nuclear plant in the 80's(doubt if half of the people in here were even old enough to remember). It'll be around for a long time. The only big problem that I've heard of with that plane was fatigue in the wing roots along the fusalage. There were a ton of them that had stress cracks from repeated high G pulls. Small or not, it is a dangerous adversary in the right hands of a pilot, as is the case with any aircraft. I could bitch all day about the A-10 being slow and doggy, but we all know that it has it's own purpose on the battlefield.
In fact, at time of initial production, the F-16 had many more advantages over the F-14. F-14 was strictly and interceptor, whereas the 16 was a ground attack and defence fighter/bomber, had a much higher armament selection, greater manuverability, and was much more fuel efficient. As stated earlier, it's sad to see any aircraft go into mothballs.

NOOO that was me favorite plane
Don't worry guys. The reason the F35B, F22, and JSF were made is to replace most fighters and attack planes we have in the military.
oh dear, another legendary Jet off to the reitement homes (museums) hopefully some of the museums can get them up to flying status.
My grandfather worked on those when he worked for Grumman Long Island. Shame to see it go.
That plane was a sack of shit, piece of junk. Tom Cruise made it famous, if Top Gun hadn't come out, no one would care.
How many teary eyed saps did you see when the A-6 Intruder got retired? None. Why? Because it isn't pretty and some faggot actor didn't sit in it.
Good riddance. They just saved the taxpayers alot of money from all the maintenance the stupid thing required. Money they will turn around and spend on new planes that cost even more money. Hooray.

lets not forget about the B-52... expected to last in the service for another 50 years. Those things are a couple million to upkeep each year as well
The Russian Planes were F-5 Tiger's used by the US Military mostly for training purposes, but in the movie they were fictioanl mig-28's. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/F-5_Freedom_FighterI.M.I Militant wrote:

It's completely gone yet, I saw it at an airshow labeled as an aeriel target *cries*, I loved that plane too.stryyker wrote:

The "Russian" planes in Top Gun were actually American F-5s.I.M.I Militant wrote:

The swept wing design helped to make the F-14 extremely agile. In the retracted position, they had caused less drag enabling higher speeds and more stable flight. In the open position they allowed for much more lift and manueverability.twiistaaa wrote:
so what did those retractable wings actually do?
the jet doesnt look very agile either?
Finally, someone who knows what he is talking about said it. Unreliable engines which had to be replaced. Flameouts, and other servicablity issues. Readiness level? A good interceptor, no doubt. Beyond that? The Bombcat did see service later, otherwise you get a limited role aircraft with a limited and not to good kill ratio. Just how many aircraft has the F-14 ever shot down?Cougar wrote:

As for agility, check the thrust to weight ratio. It was under unity (1.0) before the installation of the new engines.
There are two books detailing the exploits of the Iranian F-14s during the Iran Iraq War of the 80s but the sources are mainly Iranian.

Pound for pound, Russian jets were always better.
