Well, I'm thinking about getting a new PC.

Two problems, One, it's gonna have to be on a relatively small budget. (relative to most of the kick-ass PCs you guys have </jealousy>) and Two, I'm in the UK, so newegg isn't an option : (

I was thinking about getting this kind of setup, but I don't know how well it'll run together and with games etc.

Processor - AMD Athlon 64 X2 4200+ (AM2)

Motherboard - DFI Lanparty UT NF590SLI-M2R/G

RAM - I was originally thinking OCZ's Gold GX XTC series, but I heard that Patriot or GeIL work better with the motherboard...

HDD - A 16MB Cache 74GB Raptor for OS and Games, and a 250 GB WD Caviar for crap

PSU - Enermax Liberty 620W

GPU - I was gonna keep my x800GTO until the higher end cards at the minute go down in price...

Altogether that costs £561.55 (minus the RAM) from overclockers.co.uk, that's about $1070...

What do you think?

Thing is, it's cutting the budget a little close already, do you know where in the UK I could get 2GB of decent RAM for relatively cheap?

A good place to "save" some cash would be to go for a cheaper Mobo. I have the DFI myself, and I must say I'm somewhat dissapointed at it's stability and performance. OK, it WORKS (usually), but I've had better boards. It really sucks for support aswell.
Also, the raptor disks aren't all that. Go for two decent SATA2 disks and you've got a cheaper setup that will run just as fine. Also if you put your games (like BF2) on the same disk as your OS and paging file, you will get a performance DECREASE as opposed to putting the stuff of seperate disks. In the end, going for 2GB ram as people say will ALSO give you the ability to do away with your paging file, and thus save you the "need" to get a raptor disk. also, if you have a budget of $1000+ for the memory ALONE... Then You can get 4 GB of decent memory if you want. But 2GB is easy to find at even a FRACTION of the cost. A decent fast Geil block will run you what... $60-100 for a 512 MB ? Get four of those and you will have saved a LOT of money.

Thanks man, helps alot.

I was going to put the Paging file on the Caviar and keept he raptor for games and windows.

After I posted this I looked a bit more and found some 2GB of GeIL RAM that Might do...

Also, what motherboard would you recommend? I thought that this one was quite good...

Like everyone else said, go for a core 2 duo cpu, Patriot ram is pretty good, and yea the X800gto idea is also good.

Any chance someone could price a Conroe system?

ATM, the Chip is alot more expensive in the UK ($525 for an E6700 Newegg.com, $703 in a UK store...)
Does Newegg.com ship to the UK?

Yeah, I'm looking at it at the moment, and I chose the E6600, the price difference is only about $50 between them.

Shit, I priced up a machine on Newegg, and then one on overclockers.co.uk, just to see how much each costs.

The OcUK, $1,605
The Newegg, $1,272.94

Yeah, roughly the same stuff, better RAM on Newegg and a bigger second HDD on Newegg.

$400?

Shit...

I might get it shipped to here if they do that...

FOR CPU:
Choose for your usage and budget's...make sure the mobo it will need is in stock and at a good price for your budget.(I did go for AMD X2 42000+)

FOR VC:
     DX10 cards are not on the market...yet in N-A. I went for a cheap 256mb PCI-E (16x) 7600GS ($120CAN)
until they come out. It's doing great on BF2..playing all high...( and 5 in the .ini file)

For Ram: check with the board capability...OCZ GOLD 2G kit in my PC is doing fine and fast!!!

IMO:
Building a PC is like a puzzle...start from one piece and build around it!!!
