I'm just wondering what kind of gpu cooler some of you had luck with. I have a BFG 7800gs and would like to O/C without burning the card up. Also what is the highest temp you should let the card get to.Any help appreciated.

I tend to freak out around 75 degrees. But it all depends on where you place the temp gauge. Closer to the "core" means higher temps measured, but the card will get sick just the same. I'm unaware of the proximity of the temp gauge on the BFG model. But in general, keep monitoring the temp, once you get problems, assume you need to get it at least 5-10 degree lower to keep it running smoothly. Also remember to vent the hot air from the case itself, or it will build up over time.
Generally, it's a good idea to keep the card running for a longer period, like at least 3-5 hours to ensure that problems do not arise at a later date due to prolonged usage.
And as Dieselboy said, I like the Zalman cooler seires also if you go for air cooling. For serious overclocking, try to look into compression cooling, or water cooling systems.

But be warned, installing a third party cooler voids warranty.

i keep mine at about 50 above 55 i will take cover off above 60 i will put a regular house fan right in front of the computer above 70 i turn it off and inspect it

Look for an Artic cooling solution for your vidio card. Most Internet companies carry them. They cant be beat for overclocking.

i put my computer in my deep freez and have the wires comming out the lid then close the lid. my comp runs at 10*C. lol. my vid card at idle is probably 30*C and when playing oblivion maxed out settings 4xAA its probably at max 55*C
My Gigabyte x800 with a huge heatsink with a fan blowing at it, is around 100F at idle. With out the extra fan it can reach 160F but with the extra fan it runs about 120F with settings maxed in BF2. BFG has a lifetime warrenty, so don't mess with it too much.
Yeah, I have this issue as well. Mine idles around 105F and on high settings can get around 160F. I don't think that it's safe at all. I have an X800 All in Wonder ATI card and it's constantly running hot.

The bearings in the stock fan for my graphics card gave up on me, and as it was weekend, I had to solve the issue MacGyver style..
Because the casing for the old fan was stock-poo, and I didnt' have any supa-stylish Zalman-shit lying around the flat, I had to resort to a small, standard 3-pin fan. Drilled holes on the old casing and screwed the fan on. Added also a temp sensor near the core from the same fan-control-unit that powers the fan.
This was meant to get me through the weekend. It was a few months back, and I'm still good! Idle at 42 degrees/low fan RPM, under load 48 degrees/manual high RPM. Automatics are set so that the RPM will be at max when temp goes over 55.

Make sure you use some Artic silver 5 thermal paste as the thermal compound also. Its a bit expensive, but will last you a long time.

I've got the stock cooler on my x1900's and a Vantec Spectrum fancard in between them. Then I have a 25cm fan blowing right over them. I have the Thermaltake Armor case with side panel that has a 25cm fan on it.
I have x850xt and runs idle on 50C and when I play BF2 5 hours it gets to 80C and NO LAG and stock fan.
