Ok, here's my spec.

AMD 3200 socket 939
Asus A8N Deluxe MB - PCIe and SLi
2 * MSI 6600GTs running standard
2GB DDR 3000 OSX or some other top RAM
Audigy 1

I'm being impatient here, and looking for a quick win performance boost in speed and/or graphics handling.

What do you think will work best?

I realise the rig is essentially solid, but I like to be at the cutting edge!

!! why would you want to change this rig !! it's almost perfect

if you want too improve performance fast, it's best to buy a good cooling system for your graphic card and overclock it

and if you have the money, buy a new proc

Dunno about being almost perfect.. was that sarcasm I detected?

Socket 939 chips should be as cheap as ... erm ...  chips right now.  Sorry for the pun.  I've got David Dickinson on the brain and it's not pleasant.  Anyway, the processor would be the cheapest thing to upgrade and you will get an improvement in load times.  A nice 4000+ shouldn't set you back much more than a hundred quid.

Your RAM is nice so the other option would be for a single good graphics card but then you're looking at a couple of hundred, plus the rest.

what do you mean by standard mode for gfx? if they are not in sli, out them in
once upon a midnight dreary, while i pron surfed, weak and weary, over many a strange and spurious site of ' hot  xxx galore'. While i clicked my fav'rite bookmark, suddenly there came a warning, and my heart was filled with mourning, mourning for my dear amour, " 'Tis not possible!", i muttered, " give me back my free hardcore!"..... quoth the server, 404.

@ Max - I mean not O/Cd

@ Destined - sarcasm? - I'm guessing yes - it's funny, I only put this together at the end of last year, and I'm already having to get more and more! I bought a second gfx card for just £50, so that was a quick win a few months ago. It's proving to be a very quick fix tho!

@ aard - thanks for the advice. Yeh, that's why i was asking the question really. Is gfx the only way to get much better performance? Will I notice a big difference in speed etc when I drop, say, a 4200 in there?

Thanks for the commments, I'm not a technophobe, but I'm not mega clued either.

there won't be a large difference in most current games with the 4200 but future games are starting to take advantage of dual core proc.

all around i think the 4200 would be a good buy.

Quickwin ? Then I'd go for exchanging the two GPUs for something a bit faster... Then gen6 nvidia cards are NICE... But the gen7 are TOTALLY hot compared to them.... But do yourself a favor and DONT get an expensive one. the DX10 cards are just around the corner. And also... Next time, dont go SLi unless you have cash to burn, the added "power" is usually much less than getting the next larger GPU. And the price is usually also significantly higher.
