Can you edit the appearance of a map, and then play a battlerecorder file that was recorded on the normal version? Just cosmetic differences (lighting, sky)

No. When verifying files, it checks it bit by bit, or by certain IDs in the file. If any of those vary from the reference, it rejects it.
Why do you ask, what's wrong with BR on the modified map? Do you want to record a demo on the modded map then send to other people, but you dont want to send the map to said person?
