After reading about all the strong opinions here, I just wanted to see how many people who held them are in a position to actually do something.
If you're not registered to vote, and would like to be, you can do it from your cell: text icount to 75444

I believe that ALL citizens of the US should be required to register and required to VOTE.  That would be the best way to honor this country.  When less than half of this country votes and the majority don't, it robs this country of it's purpose.  But to vote, you need accurate information.  I won't vote on ANYTHING until I've independently studied the measure or candidate thoroughly having subjected that decision to scrutiny on both sides.  But this country's poor vote turn out probably uses TV ads and heresay/rumors for the majority of their decisions so it's no wonder we get the kind of voting results we do.  If everyone were forced to vote (obvbiously they'd have to have a sound mind), then some of that populous would study the choices and there'd be better results..and better accountability.

Oh, and people who don't vote DO have the right to complain.  that tired argument is BS.  Voting recklessly without studying is MORE dangerous than those who don't vote at all.

I hate that, if I see something on the ballot box that i don't know about, then I just don't vote on it, but I do hate hearing "i don't vote, there's no point bitch bitch bitch, blah blah blah" voting haphazardly OR not voting and bitching about it are equally dumb things to do

It would go against our freedom and way of life to force people to vote.

It is sad that the mentality of the US has turned into "Someone else will take care of it" philosophy. Democracy fails when the people aren't educated or just don't give a damn.

Well, forcing some old granny out of her bed and walking her to the booth to punch chads would be against what we stand for, but requiring her to vote or not have the privilege to operate a motor vehicle, or not be able to file a tax return would be the right kind of incentive to "force people to vote" in this country.

Seriously, at 18, registering to vote, registering with civil service, etc should all be mandatory things punishable by not being able to operate a motor vehicle or to get a job.  It would be indirectly compulsory.

I vote, I write to my Senators and Representatives, and I volunteer with political services when I have the time.

just a warning, especially with elections coming up, when I was 23 I went to one of the music midtown festivals in atlanta, and there were some "get out the vote" activist registering people, on the form it asked whether I was republican or democrat, I thought this suspicious since A) my state (georgia) does not register based on party and B) there was no mention of libertarian, green, or independent parties, I needed to change my address so I could vote in the proper district, so I filled one out. Seems they trashed it, my friends who all checked "dem" were registered with no problem, but my one other friend and I that checked "rep" were mysteriously lost, we got changed locally without a hitch, then the 2000 elections occurred and those smelly hippies that refused to register us (why on earth anyone, especially girls, go with dreadlocks, is beyond all logic) paid dearly for their passive/aggressive treachery, basically, when it comes to your vote, trust no one, I still want a paper printout with my results when using the electronic ones

He's totally right. Everyone should be forced to vote. We'll even pick the candidate they're forced to vote for just like my good friend Saddam did in the good old days. While we're at it, we should force everyone to work, force them to go to school and force them to think the same way we do. Don't forget to force everyone to call each other "comrade". Once we force all these things, we'll be the free-est country ever. Think how great that will be...

This is exactly the attitude that has run this country into the ground. Based on this, I'm glad you don't vote because you obviously don't understand enough to make a coherent decision anyway.

Roger that. I've been voting since I was 19. Conservative, yes very, but I have voted for some Democrats in my district and city. Voted for President Bush here comes the flames twice and damn proud of it, even though I don't agree with all of his policies, or lack there of, on some issues. CLOSE THE BORDERS ALREADY!

Point you should take is, vote when you know the issues and your candidate! But please, VOTE!

You will never make any difference in this society , unless you exercise your right to vote.

Amazingly 65% of the American public favored the Nazi Party in Germany, before they started rolling across their neighbor's borders. Your voice and vote do matter

Use the brain that I am sure you have somewhere hidden.
