I have noticed different styles of pilots while learning to gun lately. Some hang far back and keep long long distance, lining you up for tv missile shots. It becomes a game of dodging the incoming while trying to hit your own. Other pilots like to close distance, line up the occasional tv shot, but rely more on guns and dumb missiles.

Personally as a noob pilot I think I'm pretty good at closing distance. I can get right close and never ram the other even when they flip out and pull evasive maneuvre. I'm pretty decent at hitting the with my hellfires and me and my gunner usually win these. The problem is you usually end up taking some damage in this close in these types of exchanges, so you're sent back to base to repair if you get hurt bad.

What do you guys think? Keep distance and hope for tvs? I find it pretty easy to dodge tv's as a pilot from that kind of distance but maybe I'm just fighting against rookie tv gunners? I also find it hard to hit from that far. If I'm with a pilot focused on closing distance I usually land more good gun shots than the enemy while my pilot circles and hellfires.

I hate it when enemy chopper pilots just make a beeline for you, while their gunner misses you by 2 miles with every TV-shot, and end up crashing into you if you don't do a triple barrel roll to get out of their way.

Hang back and TV's. It's the way to do it.

As a pilot, if I'm flying with a gunner I know, I line him up with the TV.
If it's some random noob, I close it and hammer the other chopper with dumbfires.

High altitude170-210 meters, stable flight and a good gunner= TV missile Heaven.

I mostly solo TV missiles from a range, since most people i play with don't know how to use TV missile and some that do but they mostly click like crazy instead of 2-3 easy clicks.
But sometimes i encounter some pro pilot and then i stay in the gunner seat since i shoot better then that i fly.
Then mostly the goes in close but from high/up and not from the sides of the target , what i also see most people doing in the transport choppers is fly very low but then EVERY vehicle can hit, i prefer a jet coming at me then 4-5 vehicles shooting at me (take wake island for example).

Pretty much the way i go too. But I always fly so that the other pilot is on the defensive as much as possible.

Vanilla: TV from far away.

But SF maps are a different thing.
All are very foggy, except the Gator, so you need to go close and personal (especially on Mass Destruction, viewing distance about 100 meters).

Sneaking behind the enemy chopper and TV him to hell is obviously the best tactic, but more often than not you will end face-to-face.
If you are higher than your opponent, TV, but if you are at the same altitude, lining the gunner for a good TV shot is a very dangerous maneuver, as you need to pull up A LOT the nose (TV box is way lower on SF choppers), exposing yourself to your opponent's dumb rockets.

But on wake you can fly right off the water until you need to go over a flag... or even better a squad that knows where to dismount without me having to flare in the middle of the damn flag area for them to get the clue. I know its a lil off topic.

On topic, on urban maps i prefer to fly low and use buildings for cover...air maps is just a crapshoot IMO and you just have to be on your toes. But my strategies also depend on how many helo kills notice the other guy is getting b4 we meet, kinda indicates thier style of play and u can figure out where they will probly be. And of course part of the strategy is which helo your up against.

Thanks for the tips so far. Like 90% of the time I would dodge tv's and close distance. I'm pretty good at it and usually win the up close battles. But I'll try flying high with altitude for a while and see what my tv gunners got. If he's hitting or JUST missing I'll try to keep a higher elevation and let him hit from far away. Otherwise if he sucks I'll try to close distance and confuse the other pilot. I never thought about how much easier it is to get hits with the tv when you have the elevation on your enemy. It makes sense (almost common sense? :p), it just never registered in my brain though lol.

Yeah it also depends on the map I guess. I'll just keep practicing.

Hang back and line up those nice TV shots. If the gunner fire his gun at every thing that has armor i usually bail back to the carrier and tel him to bail so that a more seasoned gunner may take his place. If on the other hand he tels me (before we hit action) that he wants to learn I'm more than willing to take him trough the steps on how to use the TV effectively. The attack chopper is one of the most versatile tools you can have on the battlefield, but if your gunner is a trigger happy, gunslinging idiot your more or less useless IMO.
Dogfighting with other helis are also tricky business if the gunner is a tard.
I'm not the best pilot in the world, but i like to think that i out fly most of the guys jumping in an heli on a regular basis.

Give me a good gunner and ill raise hell..!!

turkey, you wont ever dodge my tvs.... trust me its much better to just m95 the noob out or zone him and learn to solo... i only use rockets for tanks/apcs/infantry....98% of my helo kills are with tvs, its just so much more efficient.

i like to get up close and personal, and take em out with hellfire.

only tv's that take me by surprise and the odd building take me out when i'm flying.

true, like I said i'm not the best or anything and theres definately times when an enemy chopper just has my number. I've gone streaks of 5, 6, 7 deaths in a row vs. a better pilot then me or my pilot. Its frustrating, but its good practice. I'm still learning, but the majority of average players, I find it pretty easy to dodge their shots. Occasionally I would solo (before I knew about solo switching and how to do it). I have quite a few kills where I closed distance by myself when I'm fighting an enemy WITH a gunner and still won.

I've been practicing a whole lot in single player and have gotten alot better at chopper control lately. But I'm still learning the online play, because its a whole different ballgame when 19 people are locking onto you, hummers are trying to rip you up etc.. I still kind of panic when I'm getting hit from AA and I dont know where its coming from
