The problem with Halo 1 and 2 is the repetetive and boring level designs. HL had atmosfere, Halo.. not so much.
Interesting fact: the enemy AI was WORSE in HL2 than it was in HL1. HL1's AI is insane, the marines are very smart, work together, take cover, throw grenades, but the assasins are RUTHLESS. They use hit and run tactics to hit the player unseen, they retreat, use obstacles, attack from above and below, and HIDE from the player, something which I've never seen in any other game. Only F.E.A.R. boasts enemy AI that is argueably better than HL's. Halo's AI just dodges about for a bit.
You ever played Halo 1 on legendary mode for the PC? I can't pass level one...
whats that got to do with anything, anyone can make a game hard, give me 30 seconds and ill make a flash game thats impossible.
The enemies do not increase on the modes in Halo... they get smarter... and they can actually kill you before you knew what hit you. It's kind of like playing the levels and the A.I are all controlled by humans.

played both extensively, Half Life in all incarnations beats Halo handily.  However, I can see why people stand by Halo.  I just can't enjoy it as much as any game.  In fact, the only games I really enjoy playing on consoles are sports games.  For any other I would take PC, including Halo 1.

The Half-life series has the best singleplayer I've ever played, hands down. I would have to say, though, that Halo's multiplayer is better.

But I still voted for Half-life, because the singleplayer is so good that it makes up for multiplayer.

Unlike Halo, Half-Life doesn't make CEO's of companies like Sony shit their pants.

When a GAME is enough to eat through the marketshare of a fucking console... don't you think that says something?

How many nerds spent 4 grand upgrading their computers to play Half-Life? Alot less than it took for millions of kids to convince their parents to buy them a 200 dollar xbox for christmas just so they could play Halo.

Think of it that way.

You are posting a question that obviously people with a PC, who are avid PC fans (playing BF2) will respond to. Most likely the bulk have played Half-Life considering they have a PC powerful enough to run BF2, and alot of xbox afficionados won't bother be on these forums.

But my opinion is as follows.

Halo's repertoire is greater than which is testament to it's storyline.
Let's look at a list for Halo.

3 Novels with upcoming 4th.

The Fall of Reach
The Flood
First Strike
Ghosts of Onyx (upcoming)

2 highly acclaimed games, one official game of the year. Upcoming third
Halo
Halo 2
Halo 3

Highly anticipated movie in 2008 Produced by Peter Jackson, overseen by Bungie and Microsoft, Neill Blomkamp directing

Half-Life on the other hand has many more games (2 installments and 6 expansions with upcoming 3rd installment), all critically acclaimed with the first being game of the year. However, the storyline, being as interesting as it is, has not had any success or even plans outside the video-game medium. To me this is a sign of weakness.

This is not a biased opinion either. I have both the Halo and Half-Life series.
Gee I wonder how they got that repertoire, maybe because they are owned by one of the largest corporations on Earth Microsoft.  I'm sure if Valve had as much money as Microsoft to dump into a video game you would see much more come out of the HL universe.

The novels aren't Microsoft funded. I believe Penguin Putnam are the publishers.

And whoever asked, yes, the novels are completely compliant with the lore of the game. Not one page contradicts the story in any way, since Bungie oversees and has a stranglehold on all things halo.. including the movie.

The movie you might have a point, but again, in 2001 Halo erupted onto the scene and MS wasn't really touting it very much until the critics just started pouring in. Only in 2002 did MS turn Bungie's offices into a freaking temple, and started releasing Halo limited edition consoles and crazy shit like that.

You may be right, you may not, know one knows for sure other than Microsoft and Bungie.  However, mark my words, after Half Life 3 is released and has made it's sales we are probably going to hear about a movie in production.  Just pray to God Uwe Boll doesn't make it.

This poll is a joke whats the point, i mean its not as if its even a contest, i mean come on Half-Life shouldnt even be compaired to HALO, it shouldnt be in the same sentence, Half-life is like 5 leagues above HALO. Plus Half-life has easly the best story line of any game ever i have played, matched with brilliant graphics, amazing physics and the final nail in the coffin of HALO is the Gravity Gun, Which is like the coolest gun ever.

Plus you get Counter strike free with Half Life...

We are on a pc gamer forum, you will get more answers for Half life

Look at Half life : the game is cool, it won prizes, its fun but it didnt invent anything. Its a modified quake. You get nothing original, just a guy armed with some normal weapons (lol and a crossbow). The levels are well disigned, the story line is ok but once again, nothing original, nothing revolutionary.

And half life 2 was not that great, just beautiful, but I didnt find it fun.

Halo 1 was original, the gameplay was something new.

1. You dont get lots of weapons, but all of them are completely different. After you played a few hours halo, you know that they are all different, that they are all used in different situations, and that you can make "pairs" between them, and use them together, even in halo 1, to make your way in the level.
2. You had to make decisions because you could only carry 2 weapons at the time. It doesnt look cool but yes, it is, it adds stress to the game because you are not sure if you will be able to kill everything with the 2 weapons you chose to carry.
3. You have a "reloadable" shield. This adds some tacticts. You couldnt throw yourself in the firefights and hope for the best, because the shield was not really strong, but it could recharge if not attacked during a certain period of time. So you had to hide, make sneaky attacks before you were seen, hide again, make something different because the ennemies were smart and could adapt at what you did before
4. As mentionned in 3, AI's were pretty strong, they adapted at what you did, they could hide as well as you.
5. You have vehicles. Ok not everyone like them but in Halo, they add something different, a sort of variety and complexity. All of them are different, like the weapons, and must be used in different situations. Some are strong but slow and you must be aware of what is going on in your back for example.
6. A few ennemies but pretty different as well. A good halo player will tell you that you couldnt just use a good weapon and spray it into every ennemies to get success.
7. The storyline is cool and develops as the game progress. The storyline is complex enough to provide you 4 books, 3 games and a movie...
8. You have cinematics between each level of so, to help you understand whats going on. And each cinematic is not too long, not too short
9. The music is incredible, written by Martin Odonnel. It adds a memorable atmosphere in the game. The music was adapted to each situation, depending on the part of the storyline.

All of that can me applied in halo2 too, but I found it disapointing and not as revolutionary as h1.

edit : I wrote it quicky and there may be some weird sentences.. give me a chance...

I just recently bought the Half life 2 package with hl1 in source version, have yet to finish both so I really don't know the story. Halo on the other hand was the 1st fps game I ever owned for console and PC (have both), and the low level of skill required to understand and play Halo is why I play it with my 6 year old brother, as well as other friends who aren't really into fps games. Overall I prefer the Halo series just because I don't know much about the Half Life series.
