I have just started playing assault and am having a 'mare with the kit.

The problem... It seems that no matter which gun I use (mainly G3 & AK101 so far) I always die in a 1 on 1 fight. Up close, from a distance, makes no difference.

My usual tactic is to go prone, zoom and fire. Maybe I need to not bother proning / zooming?

I did try a round on karkand where I didn't prone & zoom - was a bit better but still not that good.

Also, I wonder if I am too close to the fighting, do you tend to get right into the fight, or do you play a more stand-off game where you make sure you are in a good position? Must admit I tend to throw myself into it and think this might be ruining my KD.

Any tips from people that know how to come out of a 1 on 1 gunfight alive?

try going prone when shooting... it makes you a smaller target and increases your accuracy

1) go where the action is
2) stick with your team
3) stay near medics/support (for teh noobs)
4) dont zoom unless the guy is at least medium range
5) dont prone unless the guy is at medium range
6) dont go fully automatic unless the guy is at close range
7) dont run/fire but at the same time, dont be a sitting duck

HOPE THIS HELPS

If the enemy is close, go prone and shoot without zooming in. If the enemy is distant, do the same but bring up your iron sights. Don't spray at long distances though; shooting bursts or single shots will do the job.

spray and pray,
with an AK.

after rhyming, i have to say jump and prone, then dont zoom. I like to jump over my victem, because if they are zoomed in, its really hard to turn fast enough to hit you. But that only works if your close.

If you are using full-automatic firing mode, don't.  It is very inaccurate and you won't be able to hit a thing.  Use single-shot or short bursts... much more accurate.  The only exception to this is if you are very close to your target.  In that case, use full auto and cut him in half.  Also,  I like to use crouch quite a bit.

Wow, thanks for all the fast replies chaps!

Here's another question if you don't mind...

What would you do if you came face to face with an enemy at say, 30 metres?

Prone, crouch or stand?
Full auto and tap fire button, full auto and hold fire button down, or semi-auto and tap fire button?

At this range would you try for a headshot at all? Or just hope to land the bullets on them somewhere?

Don't use ironsights unless at med or higher range.
Control your fire, 2/3 shot bursts with AK for med range, single shot for long, full auto for close up.
As lame as it sounds - for multiple enemies start off with the GL, waste your first using the 203/GP-30 then switch to rifle.
Squad up - Medics are your best friend. Going alone is a suicide run as with any class.

In answer to your 3rd Q, i always get right up in the face of the enemy when possible - aggression can throw some people of and if you're applying pressure can make them panic.

You are doing nothing wrong, it's just crap.  Lol Nah, it's just personal preference really but i never play Assault and always Spec Ops when i want an assault rifle.  You should try Spec Ops because the rifles are far more accurate and accuracy for me is more important than power.  Just try experimenting and find out what class suits you best.
Somewhere, something incredible is waiting to be known.

G3: Go single shot. Keep pumping the firebutton, and if your aim is good, you will win the day.
AK101: Remember you have a GL, use it first, then switch to "main" firemode afterwards if you miss or only wound the target. AK 101 is equally good on single and full auto, but remember that you add a LOT of deviation on full auto, so keep it to small bursts unless you're VERY close to your target
M16A2: Remember the GL, use burst, two bursts will take down any target if you hit.
F2000: This has a decent zoom, but dont try to use it beyond medium range, you're likely to just attract attention rather than killing anything. You have the GL, use it. Full auo on this rifle apparently has LESS deiation than the G3 and other assault weapons, but standard deviation is much higher. So try to avoid this rifle on maps with much close combat (like Karkand), use it on maps where the engaement range is a bit longer (mashtur, clean sweep, kubra and others).

As for the zoming and proning, it's been posted earlier in the thread, so I wont comment beyond saying that the poster(s) are correct.

One more bit of advice. It does TAKE a while to get good with the assault kit. It usually wont take long to learn to use it, but it does take time to get GOOD (I'm not good yet, so dont take my word for it). So keep practicing.

Whats your connection like? If you've got high ping, then the chances are the other guy will always be getting the first shots on target, when yours may very well not be, due to lag (even though they look like they are).

Pretty good, got 8Mb ADSL and my ping is usually around 30-40ms.

So nice thought m8, but I can't use it s an excuse for being a crap shot ;-)

I played some time with the G3 and thought it was good, but now I must say that it isn't that hot. I always loose half my mag after a duel and gets killed when reloading soo... It got heavy fire power but it's crap with that tiny mag. Use the stock for assault unless you know you'll stay away from close combat. And always crouch when firing...it helps.

If you're in close-quarters with plenty of ammo, keep standing, don't zoom in, and circlestrafe around them while shooting on full automatic.

as assault crouch is not a good idea, your head is now the biggest target=you´re dead!!!!
Assault has extra armor, just prone and fire small bursts!!!!

Lear how to shoot an assault rifle perfectly. I never zoom in on a map like S@K.
I play myself mostly the assault role, but with the medic kit. I get the same gun and I need no friggin GL and no n00bish body armor.
Just shoot for the head and they´ll be dead...

The G3 is a great gun first of all. . . .and is better on certain maps, not all of them!

However, its better to use the AK101 most times especially close quarters cause you have a 30 round mag plus more clips.  Not to mention you have grenades to toss too, which can clear out a room better than the noob tube!!

As far as one on one combat, its luck of the draw sometimes, if a guy drops faster than you, chances are you are going to die.  Same works the other way too, if you drop and get a good sight on him, he's gonna drop.  Its about accuracy, accuracy, accuracy!! You have to know the way the AK is going to shoot, ALWAYS AIM FOR THE DOME!!! Headshots can be key if you are low on life!! But its measuring your shots! Always stay on auto, and do 2 to 3 shot bursts, stay controlled and only go full auto in close quarters combat.  If you stay under control and not freak out when you see someone, and not just rush into a possible death trap, then you will see you kdr really improve.

I love to groundpound, if you want to go a few rounds with me, I am more than willing to show you the ropes!!

Good luck! My nick in game is fadedsteve. . . .

Okay, your first mistake was choosing assault as a kit... LOL

Joking aside, you need to practice aiming with the assault rifles to get used to the iron sights; singleplayer is a good place to get some of that without it negatively impacting on your stats. When the bots don't seem like much of a challenge human players won't get the best of you as easily.

You might also want to practice using the assault rifles playing medic. You won't have the GL but the basic weapons are the same and if you nearly die in an exchange you can get yourself back up to full health before you encounter the next guy... well, with a bit of luck.

If you do want to get used to assault specifically then I'd suggest playing it more in SF, where you can more often get the drop on people from unexpected vantage points you'll reach with the ladders and your grappling hook.

EricTViking wrote:

You might try zoom, jump sideways, prone (hit the button in midair), fire instead. If you want to leave the jump out for whatever reason get into the habit of strafing left or right as you prone, makes you harder to hit.

Whether to prone or not I think depends on the range. IMO pretty close (less than 10m maybe) it's often more of a liability than an advantage if the other guy stays moving, but this may depend on the power of your machine and whether you get any scope lag.

This is an open-ended question. Basically for you, it's probably better to hang back a bit, play a bit more sneaky, and try to get the drop on guys. When you've had a bit more experience you can step it up a bit. It's much the same with me: although I'm slowly getting used to the assault rifles and carbines now I still can't throw myself into the fray in the palace on Warlord for example, I'd tend to get a KDR of 1:1 in that sort of situation as I'm just not as skilled with them as guys who use them every day.

Some other basic tips:
Only play on servers where you have good ping.
Adjust your latency to a typical ping you get.
For standing targets aim for the upper part of the torso or the head, particularly if you're right up close to a target it's not a good idea to shoot for the centre of mass; if you can get into the habit of aiming for the head when you're toe to toe with someone you'll find you kill a lot more easily.
