Believe it or not but there are a lot of spelling errors in the programmers notes... Both in BF2 and BF2142.

Also the programmers completely redesigned the code in the 1.3 patch.
Some py files have been redirected to the server client than rather from the player.  When they first made BF2 it was very, very sloppy...  But now everything is called from a giant directory of strings & variables.
Other than that they pretty much did a straight copy of the code from BF2 to BF2142.  Just added more features and bigger arrays to compensate for the vehicles, weapons, ranks, unlocks... etc.

Not to be mean or anything...
Asking about C++ or Python to some would be like asking what is Battlefield 2.

Simply put they're programming codes.
Both are very universal and can be used for a lot of purposes.
You can even write your own programming language with C++.

I'm not a professional programmer or anything...
I just know how to read it and understand what is going on.

I've done that (in C, it compiles under a C++ compiler though and is valid C++ code)

Compilers, ah what a fun class

Also played around with DirectX 9 before, interesting, personally it takes too much effort to become good at. Video game coding isn't in my future for personal reasons, I'm more into web applications and possibly compilers or networked applications, systems programming...

I worked with a programmer who I very much respect, and in his opinion video game programming is right on the frontlines of technology, and is some of the most demanding coding in the world. Thats why you wont find me bashing DICE much, because I can only imagine the types of bugs they run into writing massive apps like BF2.
