I'm in the market for a massive upgrade but I'm waiting until Vista/DirectX10 comes out before I drop most of my money. But in the meantime a friend of mine was nice enough to let me use his old components that he just upgraded from about one week ago.
He let me use:
ASUS P5GD1
ATi x850 XT graphics card
2 GB Corsair XMS DDR Pro
Thermaltake 430W psu
All of which were working fine at the time of removal from his case about a week ago. He was running the system with a Pentium 4 HT Prescott 3.0ghz which is the exact same cpu that I have currently. We installed the components in my case, hooked everything up, and turned it on. Nothing but a black screen and no beeps. Everything in the case IS getting power. Tested it on a different monitor (ATi is known to have problems with ASUS mobo's and flatscreens) but still nothing. Took out the ram and got the continuous 3 beeps, so we know the mobo IS posting. We popped out the mobo battery and changed the pins to reset the cmos but still nothing. We were unable to test the graphics card at the time (Which I hope to be able to do tomorrow) because we lacked another pci-e mobo, and were unable to test the psu because we lacked a psu with enough Watts. The psu cables were also hooked up correctly just the way they were in his case.
Any idea at all what the problem is? We're almost completely positive that nothing was static fried. These components went straight from his case into anti-static bags and were stored safely. Please help. I'm pretty sure we thought of everything, but who knows. I just hate to have to buy some new parts when only one thing is to blame.
