Most certainly won't be in his price range but the other card prices will probably drop more when the new tech comes out.. end of Nov I believe.

Overpriced for what you get.
You're better off with an x800 series card like this
for $99 instore at compusa.
Also keep your eyes open on "open box" deals at newegg.  I got a 6800 vanilla with 512mb of ram for just over $100 not long ago.
Check the charts before you drop your dime:
here.  Some cards do better in different games, and I'm pissed that BF2 didn't make toms lineup since BF1942 was, but those charts can give you a good idea of what sort of frame rate you'll get from different cards.

You gave a price for x800 and showed the comaparison with the x850 xt. The 1600 has twice the memory compared to the $99 x800.

get an x800GTO, trust me, the features with the x1600PRO are bad, it does a bad job, its the low end card of today with ATI. the x800GTO, is basically, the near high end card of last gen. I know, I have an x1600PRO, and it doesnt do too good, trust me, do NOT get an x1600PRO, if anything get the x1650PRO, its the x1600PRO, but better. same pricepoint.

i would go ahead and get something now that fits your budget...either a x800 or a x1600 would do it for you...its your decision in the end...but i have heard that the 1600s are not quite as good as they appear to be..

What's your budget?

I seem to remember reading thatwhile the 1600 is a good card, it definitely is NOT aimed at gaming and performance is poor.

If you can afford it I highly recommend one of the gainward bliss 7800GS cards. I went from a Radeon 9550 running all low no AA, to a 7800GS+ running all high 2xAA @ 1024x768.

AGP
Where's the confusion???
ATI Technologies Radeon X800 PRO Video Card, 8x AGP, 256MB DDR3

While I was looking at the x850 I switched to the x800 since the x850 for under $100 was PCI-e.  You can change the pull down menu in tom's "interactive" compaison to select the cards you're interested in.  ---Xtra comments deleted--

Ok, ok.  I musta woke up on the wrong side...

OP,
If you have the $$ drop a few exta dimes and get the x850 pro from newegg for $130.  I still can't believe I'm recommending an ATI card... I love my nvidia cards.

OP: Honestly, you're better off waiting until you can upgrade to a PCI-e system. But in a pinch, the card slo5oh recommended will do. Mine's a 6800U AGP, but I don't remember that these ever went down in price significantly.

uh, dont go for a X1600, it´s just crap for gaming. Look out for a Nivdia 7600GT 256MB AGP8x for some average settings (depends on your other specs). Also the suggested 7800GS 256MB AGP8x is a fine card and will last for upcoming games too, but it´s a little more expensive. A good 7600GT is around 190€ atm.

Ever thought to upgrade your rig to PCI-E?
