well claor we wouldnt know if your CPU had a warranty, how long youve had the CPU, or if warranty is void or whatever. It helps to be very descriptive with questions.

My old computer had this problem with an athlon xp 2400+ in it, and i decided it was the motherboard and got it changed and it worked. However, now it doesn`t even turn on so I think it might be the processor.

Both, with that old of a CPU, you would be hard pressed to find a replacement.  You can get a new socket 939 mobo and chipset for a few hundred dollars.  173$ extactly.

I am guessing your running AGP:

Gigabyte GA-K8NSC-939 nForce3 250Gb Athlon 64(FX) Skt939 DDR ATX Motherboard w/Audio, Gigabit LAN, RAID/Serial ATA Retail
$75

AMD Athlon 64 3700+ Processor (San Diego) Socket 939
$98

Hey Boris,

I think the majority opinion is both. Get a new mobo and processor.

I'll have a look around for you, see what the best deals are.

Okay, had a quick look and this motherboard at the bottom of the page looks like it would fill your requirements reasonably well and give you the option to upgrade to a PCI-E graphics card when you've got the cash.

For processors, just choose the one your budget will stretch to from here.

Just my 2 cents though, I'm sure other people will have other information.

If you buy a new processor for that Mobo your going to kick yourself later. Get a 939 system, they are cheap and can still compete with the newer sockets. A 3700+ would rock your world.

It would be really hard to find a decent CPU for that old board, and for just a few extra dollars you can get something that might actually last you longer then a month.

Stealth42o put together a very decent system for the cash. I would go with it if your strapped for cash, I just don't like buying AGP boards because they won't run the newer cards. But on the other hand you dont want to have to buy a new video card right away either.

Edit: I would personally go with Doc, I didn't know they made combo Mobos, guess I never needed one
An X2 processor would surely be fast enough for some of the newer games as well.

+1 for Stealth42o
+1 for Doc

I just got the stuff in my sig from ZipZoomFly for a grand total of $387. BIG upgrade from my old Athlon XP 2400+ and 6600 AGP.
