I think one of the main reasons it’s so hard to quit smoking is because all the benefits of quitting and all the dangers of continuing seem very far away. Well, here’s a little timeline about some of the more immediate effects of quitting smoking and how that will affect your body RIGHT NOW.
  • In 20 minutes your blood pressure will drop back down to normal.
  • In 8 hours the carbon monoxide (a toxic gas) levels in your blood stream will drop by half, and oxygenlevels will return to normal.
  • In 48 hours your chance of having a heart attack will have decreased. All nicotine will have left your body. Your sense of taste and smell will return to a normal level.
  • In 72 hours your bronchial tubes will relax, and your energy levels will increase.
  • In 2 weeks your circulation will increase, and it will continue to improve for the next 10 weeks.
  • In three to nine months coughs, wheezing and breathing problems will dissipate as your lung capacity improves by 10%.
  • In 1 year your risk of having a heart attack will have dropped by half.
  • In 5 years your risk of having a stroke returns to that of a non-smoker.
  • In 10 years your risk of lung cancer will have returned to that of a non-smoker.
  • In 15 years your risk of heart attack will have returned to that of a non-smoker.

So, you have more immediate things to look forward to if you quit now besides just freaking out about not being able to smoke.

as if i really care but i thought i would let everyone know. now go discuss!!

and no i didn't quit, someone sent this to me

Soo, is there a moral to this story, if you want to call it that?

yeah, thats what the ships corpsman used to say when i was in my rack between the thermonuclear missiles...inside the nuclear submarine. While those are all benefits, I still, maybe foolishly hang on to that old motto: 'Live fast, Die young, and leave a good looking corpse'. Just so many other ways to  be blotted out, it kinda seems fool hardy to worry about what could get you @ the end...but then it sucks to go that way having surived so much else.

decisions, decisions....

Quitting smoking is easy.  I do it at least 12 times a day.

been a smoker for the past 10 years,

its been 4weeks and 3 days since I quit (9/11/07).  I feel much better after 4 weeks, the cravings have pretty much gone completely,
only get the odd craving when I have a drink, or some food or see someone else smoking or when the sky is blue OR WHEN PEOPLE START TALKING ABOUT SMOKING.

ok *deep breaths*, chewing gum is just as good as smokes,i'm on 2 packs of them a day, but i'm glad i've been finally able to give up, you just need some motivation to get ovr the first week and then after that the you start to think "if i smoke now thats a week of hell i went through for absolutely nothing"

I do the first 2 points everyday
I should stop really, I only smoke between 6pm and 2am and if I have pot then I don't smoke cigs themselves usually 3-4 doobies.  My main problem is when i go out drinking then I almost chain smoke.
But all that list is true.
I gave up for 5 weeks (lame ass atempt I know) and I noticed my energy levels increase, I was far more active and up for doing stuff.
Do you smoke ?? if so look at the skin on your arms are they covered in white blobs/splotches that's bad circulation I noticed those clear up on my crappy 5 week attempt
Gonna have a nother bash at quiting in the new year

I gave up 14 weeks 2morrow why?? well because smoking alongside a accident coursed me to have :-

2 blood clots in left leg

1 clot in left lung

2 clots in right lung

right lung also  collapsed and has just been inflated back to normal through key-hole surgery

iam 34 married and have a lil kid this taught me a huge lesson in life i just hope it never happens to any of you guys .The 1st week in hopsital was the worst time of my life i was in so much pain even after haveing these pumped into me every 2 hours ;-

2 asprin

2 tramadol's

and a big injection of morphin that kept the pain down to something i could jusy about bare without passing out .

Also i had a constant oxygen mask on 24/7 just to help me breathe

Give it up a.s.a.p all of you its not worth it i smoked since i was 17 and 17 years later looked what happened to me .

I would give up now,if i didn't love smoking weed so much.

And one of my main enjoyments in life which makes it such a hard decision i think i will have to start eating it instead.

Wow... When was the last time YOU quit ?

It's never easy, I've smoked for about 20 years on and off, I think I total about 9 years of smoking during that period. I've had three breaks of more than a year. and let me just say, NO, it's NOT the "benefits and dangers" that are far out into the future. It's the ADDICTION, Not nessesarily a PHYSICAL addiction, but for some (like myself) a metal addiction. Smoking helps me get through the day. I've had 11 years of NOT smoking, so I KNOW that it's possible to do without the smokes, I just prefer having them with me.

That's not to say I wont quit EVENTUALLY, but it'll NOT be because of the "benefits and dangers" that are far into the future as you say.

i love watching the double amputee diabetic on his smokebreak here everyday, and since he's a unionized DOD employee (air force base) i can't help but wonder how much of my tax money is going to his hospital bills, he looks like damn gleep off of the herculoids cartoons, but goddammit he's never late for a smoke break
