Hi, I tried to mod the demo version of this game, but it didn't work.

Here's what I did.  In my C:\.....\BF2142 game folder, I opened up some archives that contain the files that the game uses.  I changed some values around, like soldier running speed, jump height, etc.  Then I put them back into the archive.

After that, I installed the BF2142 dedicated server.  In the dedicated server's archives, I added the files into them that I modified, so that my game files and dedicated server files had the exact same things in them.  This should make them compadible when I join my own dedicated server, right?

Wrong.  I joined my own server using direct IP.  It loads fine.  After verifying client data, it says to revert my game files back to the original files.

Is this a problem with my mod, or did EA purposely make it impossible to mod the demo?

They most likely made it impossible to edit demo.

when you change the files around you also need to change the file that tells the exe what the mod is called.

what i would do is copy the demo, then make the changes, then load the new game.

Ya, you have to make a completely new mod, then make the same mod for the server. When you start the server choose the mod for the server. Start your game, go to community, and activate your mod. Join your server, and if you didnt fuck up somehow you should be fine.

Delete the .md5 file from both the server and client if it's present. Thats what you do in bf2 to get around that.

You can't select any mods from the Community in game menu!  The thing on the side bar that says "Custom Games" is faded out and clicking it does nothing.  Does this mean that modding the demo is impossible?

This does not work with 2142.  EA/DICE made it even more difficult...

It's not impossible but takes time.

You have to run generate_md5.py and hack the dedicated server's executable with a Hex editor.

hey To each his own; but why do you need to mod.  Are you that bad that you can't win with out modding?  I'm not trying to be mean or anything but why do people cheat? Does it make them feel better about them selves?  The Best mod you could do is to yourself. Its called Practice.  I don't know call me Old school....??? or whatever.  I am by far not a great player, I'm decent, but at least i can say that cuz I did it with out cheating. tino275 is my screen name if you want a point  of refferance. NE Ways good luck with your modding.  I hope to play against/with you some day.

ummm dude they want to mod the game so they can get the unlocks before buying the game/ before the game comes out

That's actually not possible.  Texture files for the unlocks are missing from the demo... only the meshes are present.  I guess if you could somehow get mods to work... then you could add in your own crappy textures to play with the unlocks.

Actually I was just fucking around with the game files, doing stupid things like making your guy jump 20x higher, taking away fall damage, super speed, rapid fire rockets, etc.  I wanted to remake my silly little mod that I made in BF2 for this game.

Sorry...It was late when I made my original post.

I did forget to mention that you may need to merge some files from the beta into the demo along with my instructions above depending upon what you are trying to mod.
