as you can see from the thread topic, i just recently installed an EVGA Nvidia 7900GTX on my system and downloaded the drivers. The card runs BF2 on high between 40-70 FPS no matter what server i am playing on, even if i am playing singleplayer. Is it possible that it turned down its clock speed or something liek that to protect itself? My drivers are current, so i am at a loss as to how i can figure out what the problem is. Any help would be appreciated.

the card has 512MB Ram, my comp has 2 GB

Running on 0 AA

Have you got vertical sync enabled?

If you have, the Gfx card will only spit out a frame in sync with a monitor refresh. If your monitor runs at 70Hz vertical refresh you will max out at 70fps.

i need to know your other system specs, and why the hell do you want to underclock it? the damn thing isnt going to hurt itself doing what it was designed to do.

He doesn't want to underclock it, he's wondering if it turned itself down incase it damaged itself or something.

tbh, I don't think he checked again after his second post...

But yeah, you need to post more info to help anyone help you.

You need to go into the nVidia control panel. Or go into the settings for your Gfx card and look for a tick box for Vertical Sync".  If it is ticked, untick it.

No, but it is one of the things that may limit frame rates.

If it hasn't had any affect then it wasn't causing you problems.

If your frame rate is a lot higher than before then vertical sync was the issue.

Did turning it off help?

Good.

There's two places you can change the performance optioons of your Gfx card, in the display adapter settings in Windows ( where you unticked vertical sync ) and in the game itself.  Most of the display adapter settings should be pretty good straight out of the box, and many of them will probably be set to "Application preference" or something similar. This means that the Gfx driver will accept the settings from the game.

Best bet for tuning your Gfx settings is (apart from v-sync) leave all the display adapter settings as default (if there's an option in the display settings to reset to default use it) and adjust the in game settings.

In the game, set the screen resolution how you want it (say 1280x1024) and set everything else to low or minimum. Now fire up the game and note your FPS. Now it's a process of gradually upping the in game settings until you start to lose performance - at this point everything will be running at the max for your rig.
