These are my thoughts on 2142, feel free to agree/disagree/flame/change my mind, but make sure you have some valid argument.
-Infantry combat
First off, support. The guns get more accurate as you shoot? Screw short, controlled bursts, so you can spray with a laser rifle in a few seconds? Makes no sense, and makes gameplay screwy IMO.
Engineer. I really like what they did to this class actually, a reasonably good smg with AT rockets and the ability to unlock mines later. This is probably my favorite change over BF2 infantry.
Assault. My absolute most hated class at the moment. The gun is weak as hell (all you people who say aim need to stfu, I have 25% accuracy on my first BF2 account and am used to guns that can kill with less than 5 body shots) Honestly most times in a head to head confrontation with another guy where we have full healthy, usually reloads all around. I think this class is ridiculous atm, and slows down game play. Certainly hoping this changes with unlocks, the Baur will hopefully be the saving grace of this class.
Recon. What the hell did they do to my sniper class. I don’t know what they did to the pistols, but it kills any good CQC sniping. The pistols are somewhat inaccurate and have a smaller clip, but what really kills it is how you can’t just fire as fast as you can click, there is more time between firing shots. I just can’t see someone being able to take out someone else with one clip of these pistols, unless they manage 2-3 headshots. Then the long range sniping has also been essentially taken out. With the breathing up and down movement (that I like), you just can’t hold steady and take one shot over 300m, dont_be_ss must be crying. The stabilizer may help this, but there should be a way to calm your breathing waaaaaaaaaaay down, and make it stable for about 3 seconds, and as far as I’ve heard from beta testers, the stabilizer doesn’t do the trick. Overall I think the sniping is actually too easy, but can’t be really useful in flag capping situations. People complain about the uselessness of BF2 snipers, so what do they do? Make them more useless.
Overall Infantry combat. With the default weapons in the demo, I think it’s very disappointing. The guns essentially go against every preceding FPS, and real life. If you like physics that don’t make sense or dueling someone for more than 10 seconds, then I guess this is for you. Personally I’m hoping the unlocks speed up game play more, but am not holding my breath.
-Vehicles
Tanks. Tracked tanks are pretty good, much like the ones in BF2. I think the tanks are always the best and most balanced part of the Battlefield series as a whole, and this doesn’t disappoint. The hover tanks are…interesting. It will take some time and practice to learn to pilot them well, which is good, but I’m not so sure about the lack of coaxial gun for the pilot. On paper the additional teamwork is great, but it actually happens maybe 1% of the time on pub servers, and I’m not sure people will feel it’s worth two people to use in competitive play. I would probably advocate making these stronger, armor or weapon wise.
Mechs. Love these things. I think they are very balanced, fun to pilot, look good, and fit very well. This is probably my favorite part of 2142, kudos to the developers.
Flying chopper/gunship/jet/pos. Damn I hate these things. Whiners bitch about air superiority in BF2, so they essentially take it away in 2142. The transports are a nice element of teamwork, but the attack flying things just suck. Literally a monkey could fly one, just about the only way to crash these things I’ve found is to run it into something or to take your hands completely off the controls, but the latter usually results in a landing. These things are so stable you cannot do a barrel roll, tip to any extreme level, turn quickly by rolling, or do pretty much anything other than be really stable and go forward. Aircraft must be inherently instable at some degree to get any sort of performance out of them, and apparently they took this out so everyone and their dog could fly one. I’d like to take one of these on with an “outdated” Longbow any day.
Overall Vehicles. Ground Vehicles pretty good, mechs great, flying sucks the big one.
General Impressions. Ground combat is weird, but I’m hoping unlocks will help speed things up. Paired with the vehicles, it isn’t bad, but they have basically succumbed to every whiner, changed anything bitched about, and then made laser guns instead of modern day.
Will I play it? Maybe, depends how bored I get in a few months. The infantry isn’t bad, but why not stick with BF2? Basically I would be buying it for the maps and guns. (Gee, what does that sound like? A Booster Pack!) One thing for sure though, I will always have my trusty BF2 ready to fly, I don’t think 2142 flying will ever surpass BF2’s. Titan mode isn’t bad, but I still want to know why BF2 never had any more modes added, like CTF.
