when ur commander u get no points for killing. u get no points for anything. just an average of ur teams score.
Points. kthxbye

I've been trying out the Infantry only servers and it's been interesting. It's like the ultimate noobfest. I can't imagine what it would be like if we brought 1.2 back and had inf only. Anyway, so I was playing commander and I don't see the point to it really. You get 1 pt for every kill you make, no points for healing, repairing, etc. If you happen to win, this gets 2x'ed which is pretty much the same as if you had just gone without being commander. All you get are the scan, uav, and supplies things, and you get to worry about losing for real this time. Is it really meant to be like this? Is this why almost no one goes commander in inf only? Or am I just missing another aspect of commanding and how to get points in that position.
I find Commanding in IO very interesting because you have to defend flags while commanding, you have to move from flag to flag and after a moment, other players begin to form squads and playing like a whole and that's the interesting part. From a whole bunch of unknown, there is a beginning of coordination and it's wonderful ! I'm rarely disapointed by players, if you're aware of your team, squads begin to fill up and at the end, there are only a few lonewolfes and we win !
and last but not least, no more artilery !
IO is pure fun for me.
See u soon on IO servers :-)
KF.
To my mind the commander is needful especially in IO mode! Since there are no vehicles to rush to flags, the soldiers may have a long way back when caught by an unexpected (not spotted) enemy at a flag far away.
Some people only command, when they have arty. Either they'd like to have the feeling, that they can do some harm to the enemy too, or they want to get some specific awards (f.e. expert AA), or they just want to push their K/D a little bit.
In fact every single arty kill will lower the commander's final score, since nobody of his team could earn points for this kill (same applies to every other action the commander does by himself). But sometimes the arty (or other actions like taking flags) may decide, whether the team wins or not, so it can be necessary to double the points. The less the commander does beside commanding, the higher his points will be!
So I don't use the arty to get a lot of kills, but to defend flags against single enemies, to hunt spawn rapers and for other purposes like that.
For me the missing arty on IO is no problem, I still will do the job if necessary or when I'm just in the mood to command.

A reason to be commander in INF Only, as in playing jalalabad like I do, there's always a need for UAV and scanning and spotting and supplies. Also, the commander doesn't have to stay put. YOu can be on the ground leading attacks with UAVs etc, supply your roaming flag capping groups. It's pretty stupid to go without commander in jalalabad IO.
Key being the commander doesn't sit still like you would when you need to constantly arty and spot people. Also, the real main reason to command is to be a team player and because you actually give a shit about your teammates, winning, and not being a selfish asshole like so many who play.

I guess from all the responses I have misunderstood how commander scoring works. I always though that it was 1pt for every kill you make since every time I finish a round, my 2x score is always my kills x2. So I guess it's just that I feel like I can get more points by going around killing troops than by doing the commander thing.
Here's a question about the scoring though... if commander points are just an average of your team points, how can a commander be first place by just commanding??

2x average.
Anyway, a commander on pubs is useful only for UAV, arty, etc. In matches, or rare scenario's where someone actually gives a f*ck about what the commander has to say, he can spot like crazy, find the enemy, keep track of them, and follow them live while telling his team where they are.

Infantry Only in leagues is always without commander, maybe that's the reason why noone plays commander on the server?
Anyway if you really suck going commander is easy points.
Recently, I've enjoyed being a sniper commander on some IO servers. Find a relatively safe high point with at least 2 flags in view. UAV, Scan, Supply, and spot like hell and snipe the enemy at your flags. It's been pretty fun and like you all have said, "easy" points.
You sir are correct..IRONCHEF wrote:

Play to win... With a good commander you have an advantage, if the enemy team does not have one. Knowing where the enemy is, is a great advantage.
The commanders job is to spot enemys and drop supplies.. Spotting is the most important..
If you give 2 good players on the same team a good commander on a IO server they can take over the match and pull the win off...
And to everyone else that said they do not get enough points for commanding.. And thus the reason for not needing a commander,
you guys suck and need your points to try and give you credibilty on the battlefield.. If your not playing to win your playing for yourself in a TEAM based game. therefore you are a waste of space.. Just another blind idiot running around hoping to get a 1.5 kdr as long as you get 60 to 100 points, or a precious gold medal..GotMex? wrote:

If you look in the Wiki tactical guides, you will find a couple of tutorials that will help un-suckify you!
http://wiki.bf2s.com/tactical-guides
Why command? If you get a few clanmates on your team, have them do tactical things (on Jalalabad as USMC, cap the mosque and whatnot) while you sit back. Drop UAV from time to time. Easy wins, easy points. Commanding on IO even when you don't win doesn't hurt.
The only thing is that I wish there were unarmed Humvees/Vodniks/NJ2046's to sit in to accrue transport time. Transport time seems to be the hardest to get.

Fighting commander ftw!
Just finished 14 rounds on karkand as USMC, IO, 8 vs 8, small map:
in total: 1025 pts 8 gold 2 silver and 4 bronze
The thing is that you can still fight and help your team ( i prefer medic in the start, and when you have taken Hotel and Square i switch to sniper to keep the enemy pinned down by the market...) most of the time I didnt even have 1 squad to order around - we were just superior!

So 14 rounds for a total of 1025 pts = 73 points per round. That's about 36 kills if you just went all combat. I can get that kind of score anytime in a Karkand infantry only if I'm not commander. It's a lot easier when you have everyone running around vulnerable to a well placed nade and you have your trusty AK with you.ljt-cohones wrote:

On a regular server I find it harder to get that kind of score cause there's tanks/vehicles/arty/etc to deal with and I spend most of my time defending/capping flags since it's much more important here. So going commander here can be good for me because if I do well I'm guaranteed a high score which I might not get otherwise.
On infantry only however, I just don't see the same benefits. Points are the MAIN point of this game, and I just think they made the commander less able to get points in this type of match.

Because you almost always have to fight and command at the same time. It's a little more challenging.A commander can make or break a round. Especially a round with few players.
No one wants to do it because there are no easy artillery kills. To many I guess it doesn't seem worth the extra effort for the lack of kills.

Infantry is just pointless, fullstop.
Someone goes sniper. So someone on the other team goes medic. So another person on the first team goes sniper. So another person on the second team goes medic. So we get a third sniper on the first team. And so, this time, someone on the second team also goes sniper. So the first team recruits a medic or two. So the second team get a couple more snipers in. And so it goes on...
Battlefield2 was never meant to be an infantry-only game. Neither the maps nor the kits are balanced for that style of play. That's why it's called Battlefield2, not Infantry2.

Infantry Only is the most fun I've had in ages - plus the lack of commander is quite refreshing, it really annoys me when all I can hear through my headset the whole round is "enemy spotted". Besides if you really need UAV's and supplies you can quickly hop on as commander organise what toys you need and where then quickly resign.

I will agree you do see a lot of snipers, but in most games I can look up and its raining granades!!!Scorpion0x17 wrote:

there is plenty of reason to be commander in IO, and if you think other wise please stay out of my squad in game.
IO is Snipers vs medics and a little legal statpadding , been commander there and i have to say it wasnt that bad , gave me an idea how folks play IO but i do miss the artillary
Are you joking? inf. only is gay and it's for n00bs!Masterstyle wrote:

Commanders on Inf only usually completely suck at it. IE: I'm MEC on Karkand, fighting up at Hotel with the rest of the team. Then all of a sudden, we lose the whole east island (64player map), because the stupid commander never gave us warning.
Then when I command, I spot stuff like crazy but nobody seems to care.
I'm one of the people that take great advantage of the UAV. I usually zoom my map in to the second closest, or closest zoom so that I can see where people are.

EDIT:
Yeah, so tank whoring isn't for noobs? Actually fighting with guns, not tanks, takes more skill than you'd think. Remember, you actually have to aim now.Nikola Bathory wrote:
