So... first thing; I'm an anti-WoW'er

For the past four years-ish, I've led a productive life. I have a bunch of friends, only a couple closer-than-the-rest friends. I've kept my gaming side to a couple of other people who are like me, blend in with everyone else, not super-best-friends or anything, etc. We discuss games/computer stuff occasionally, but with other people we switch out of it. I've never mentioned computers or games during any of my sports, or during class with my friends, or any time at all for that matter. I feel...uncomfortable... bringing up gaming etc. Sure, this other non-gaming circle of friends plays a few video games every now and then but that's about it.

Now it's changing though.

One of my closer-than-the-rest friends is super-rich, and so over the summer he tried out World of Warcraft, not that seriously as the paying thing wasn't important to him. So he plays it every other day or so. Someone else in our circle tries it out for fun when they were bored, and thus it spread to around 5-6 of my guy friends. Even my other closer-than-the-rest friend who always got pissed when someone would go off to play a video game or something, is into it. We only have like 8 guys in our group. The recent South Park episode doesn't help either. So of course, first thing I do is tell them not to be gay and dorks and not go off to play the game all the time. No effect. This weekend four of them are planning to go and buy copies (after trying the trial/friends' account) and start playing and paying. They're already starting to integrate 'pwn' and 'uber' into daily language, too much like in South Park. I don't wanna be in a group full of gamers. Sure, it's more than enjoyable to talk with those other few guys, but I like to keep it off the topic when I talk with my normal circle. And of course, the girls in our group aren't too keen on this either.

So, what do you think I should do? Anything?

Serious advice only, please.

Get them into playing guild wars.

I'm in the same situation... Only my friends haven't found out that videogames are fun... I would just act "normal", but still hang around with them. Laugh when they start with there 1337-speak etc... Gamers are fun to talk with, but the language is fucking anoying.

Somehow I knew that you were going to reply to this thread first, and have no serious advice whatsoever.

Seriously, get them to start playing Guild wars, much better then WoW and you do not get addicted to it and you dont use words like 1337 or uber in daily speech.

I'm not worrying about how I appear outwardly, I'm worried that I won't have any friends that will do something other than play video games. Even I'm dedicating more time away from the computer as before. It's more fun doing other things.

Well you can't tell your friends how to lead their life so if they wanna play games then that is thier decision.

So you
1, look for new friends
2, Organise things for your friends to do and try to tempt them away from WOW, so long as they are still up for doing stuff when suggested to them it should not effect you too much.
Carry on as normal and hope it is just a phase and that your friends will get bored of WOW in a couple of months.

I would just say this to you. Personally I could give a shit less what someone else thinks about me. While I do play BF2 quite a bit, and work in the computer field I also race motorcycles, raise my 7yr old little boy and do lots of other stuff. You just need to balance things out. Sometimes I play XBOX, Playstation or GameCube games with my son. Other times we work on motorcycles together or play football. Just find that happy balance and be yourself.

I wish it was the latter.

Meh, but yeah it's really hard to just 'join' a group/clique when you're  not a new student.

In my grade, there are a lot of groups;

First there's the Asian block...

Thai Gangsters
Rich Thai kids (and I mean really rich, you have no idea)
Nerdy Koreans
Cool Koreans
Cool Japanese
Taiwanese

and everyone else...

My circle (dunno how other ppl see us)
The nerdy-dorks
The 'super cool' but mostly assholes
Euro-druggies
The emo drama people

And yeah.
Of course then there are groups per grade and some small mixing in between, but they're mostly structured and cut that way.

Not easy to just 'join' another group.

and let me say this; i don't care what other people think of me, it's what I think of other people.

This whole discussion makes me laugh. I remember back when I was in high school...ah yes...13 years ago. There were "clicks" or groups or whatever you want to call them. It was mostly just a fashion statement. There were the rockers (not too many kids like the old AC/DC Metallica stuff anymore) I think they're pretty much the equivilent of the emo kids nowadays with the way they dress and do their hair. Just wanted to be separate from everyone else and wanted no questions about that.
Then there were the stoners. Easy going, skipping class, always sneaking out for a smoke, didn't do homework.
Next were the gangstas'. Baggy clothes, always worried about how they looked. Bunch of tough guys (mostly just wanna-be tough guys) Always hangin out with the ghetto bitches but thinkin they were the shit. So laughable nowadays. Most of them were into stealing car stereos to improve their own.
The you had the jocks. Always into sports, worked hard in school, rarely went to parties or seemed to have any fun (unless you consider running for 3 hours fun). Always had the hottest chicks though which confused me back then because they all seemed like such assholes.
The nerds had their own circle as well. Bunch of brainiacs, loved video games and homework (and made a pretty penny off of me, doing my homework) Rarely got any putang but it didn't seem like they were much interested in girls, or at least they played it off pretty well. They weren't into fashion, maybe that had something to do with it.
The Skateboarders were probably the most laid back crew next to the stoners. Always looking for parties and wanting to hang out with friends. Some had cute girlfriends.
I had an interesting school carreer. I didn't really fall into any one grouop and they all had one or two people that I hung out with. I didn't dress any one particular way. My parents had money but I was broke. I smoked cigarettes so hung out with the stoners quite a bit. I never was into any team sports but I loved snow skiing, water skiing, and any other sport that was not reliant on a "team" for victory. This helped me become friends with some of the jocks but never hung out with them after school. I guess you could say I was somewhere in the middle. I loved rap (that's back when it was still pretty new), so the gangsta's didn't mind me hanging out with them and I had a few friends who thought they were real gangters so them having my back went a long ways back then. I was a little guy. When someone messed with me, I rarely needed to ask for help. Even the biggest assholes in school would stick up for me just for the fact that I was too small to defend myself (most of the time). I think the trick to making the most out of high school is variety. If you don't get stereotyped by clothes or hair, you've got a better chance of making a few friends in each group. Don't try to stick out and be different because the only people who will want to be seen with you are the other outcasts and that just puts a bad image on you. People do judge by looks, it's just the way it is. People at that age go through many different fazes and they're constantly changing what they like to do. Video games are amazingly forgiving when it comes to your apperance and I think that's what draws a lot of kids in. Everyone is equal online. Everyone starts out the same. I'm sure you will see a lot of your friends get into games for an escape from reality. I think it's actually a good thing. It keeps your mind off a bad day if you're having one. I would say not to worry about what they're doing and just be yourself. Play games with them.

Holy fucking shit I just wrote a novel. sorry-

hmm, yeh i would just let them choose what they want to do, and use it to get closer to your girl-friends.

it's never a bad thing to have some girl-friends, as then they can offer advice or anything when you get a/with your girlfriend.

oh yeh, and don't ever get WoW!

promise me you won't!
