I climbed the Leaning Tower the same summer he crashed ( he died rope jumping off the tower ) we could see his ropes rigged and were like wtf?
There was no logical reason to do what he was doing. He was tying climbing ropes together to form a 600' rope and jumping off the top of the cliff.
He got busted for something, I forget, and he ended up in solitary in the yosemite jail for a week; it drove him insane.
When he got out, he was to retrieve his rigging off the tower. It had been raining. And he decided to go for one last jump. He missed his mark and one section of rope sawed over a static line rigged from rim to rim ( the one where we looked at it and said wtf? ) and the knot broke.
As he was prone to do, he made a cell phone call from the summit, and the line was active as he fell, connected to some friend.
His body was found, face up, undamaged after a fall of 1500 feet. No blood, no gore. His arms were crossed over his chest.
Weird shit.
I spent almost two months that year climbing in Yosemite.
