Right my comp crashed a few times and then wouldn't boot, screen just went black and monitor onto standby before it supposed to go into windows. So I formatted annd reinstalled windows loaded up fine, went install nvidia drivers and fucked up, wouldnt recognise card. Now I can get the comp to recognise the card (Geforce 5700 ultra) it says it working fine and that I need to restart, but when I do same problem as before wont boot. It only works with no drivers installed. Under display settings my adapter is listed as VgaSave.
Anyway I tried everything I can think of to get it to work but no joy. So I think the card is screwed so I wanna get a cheap replacement (dont wanna spend too much cus cant really afford at the mo and gonna try and upgrade to PCI at christmas so no point spending too much).
Anyway I seen this card: HIS Excalibur ATI Radeon 9550 256MB priced at £35 (normally wouldnt go for ATI but it cheap), my main question is this much better than my old 5700 ultra. It has more ram but slower clock speeds etc. I looked and couldnt find any benchmarking info.
Thanks for help in advance...

check out this card.  If I am not mistaken with Ati's latest driver set they are not supporting the older 9000 series of cards so you will have to use an older driver set.   For the price this is an awesome card.

Stores are giving away that ATI 9550 card...I've seen it for about $35 USD after rebate.  I'd steer way clear.  Get an ATI x1600 or Nvidia 7600 series card for about $100 USD and you'll probably be good for a year or two.

I have an x1600 at the moment and it is a great card.  I run everything on high with no problems with the 256mb card.

Ok thanks for the help but like I say I looking to spend literally as little as possible now before major upgrade later. Something comparable or slightly better than my current 5700 ultra will do me for the time being.

If i could afford to do that I would, but I cant. So like I say at the minute I just want something that will give the same or slightly better performance than my 5700.

Yeah got 1.5 gig. My 5700 could run with low/medium settings so that all I want really. But like the I say the core/memory speeds for the 9550 are lower than the 5700 but it has twice the memory, therefore will it run smoother or not?

Depends on the rest of your system. Remember BF2 is very processor hungry so having a slow processor can really bottleneck your system.

I had a 9550 until recently and I could run on all low except for geometries and 100% view distance and get a playable fps, but I had 2Gb RAM and a P4 3.4Ghz.

All of those options are PCI-E, I think he's stuck with AGP.

Have a look here. I know they're over your budget but unless you're willing to spend that little bit more I don't think you're gonna see any improvement over what has just died on you.

Too bad you're way over there across the big pond.  I just ordered an X1950XTX and will be shifting my X800XT AIW to my secondary system, and am selling my X800 Pro w/Zalman cooler.  I would have sold it to you for $60.

Look for an ATI 9600 - for that generation of card it blew away Nvidia - and it can be had really really cheap and plays BF2 quite well.

The budget version of ANY card from ANY generation is crap.  x1300 is HORRIBLE.  It's the newest "generation" of graphics so you pay $150 (instead of $400 for the x1900) but its GARBAGE.

Which is why I would steer clear of the Nvidia 7300 also.

What you want is a mid-range card from an old enough generation that the price fits your budget.  That's why I'm suggesting an ATI 9600 of some flavor.

I have that card + 2 GB of ram and a 3.00 GHZ proccesor and i can play bf2 fine with most on high.

It seems to play 2142 better though.....
