If you have at least 1GB RAM disable your paging file.
I have 1GB (2x512) PQI Power Series RAM, and I disabled my paging file about an hour ago, loaded up BF2, and wow what a difference. No more lag when snaping fast turns or when entering hectic areas with nades going off and bullets flying.

Wake Island used to lag like mad for me. All the trees and what not used to kill my FPS, now they dont. Of course I still lag here and there, especially during the biggest of firefights, but my FPS practically doubled on wake island.

Just in case some of you are wondering what paging file is, its like RAM(memory), but its drawn off your HDD. Its in the top 10 causes for lag in games, since its much slower than RAM. Your system will use it even when its not needed, which is quite frustrating.

DO NOT DISABLE IT IF YOU HAVE LESS THAN 1GB [1024MB] OF RAM.

You can disable it if you have less than one gig, it's just that you'd basically have to have a fresh install of Windows+BF2 to manage without a page file.

hassles? What do you mean?
Im finding my PC's quick as heck now.

Bf2 loading time is cut in half. I was actually able to get the cobra without having to wait for it, its awesome.
I was like the 4th person to spawn in, in all servers.

I can now choose which vehicles I want.

That's not a good all around piece of advise. Most systems will become extremely unstable if you disable your paging file. I wouls usggest always leaving at least 512MB for paging.

Ok let me explain the numbers behind the pagefile.

system managed size:
this will commit roughly the same amount of HDD (Virtual memory) as real memory + more (HDD memory) if  required. So yes, when 1st loading into a map, if ur gfx are set to high, you will get access lag, you will also get access lag when spawning to a part of the map you've not been to recently. so bottom line is, if 1GB in use, 500MB of that will be HDD memory.

no paging file:
This will commit all physical memory and pretty much none virtual memory. (except maybe a little for windows operations) The only problem is, if you set your gfx high too much where you wont have enuff memory to support it, the game will CTD and you'll get a message saying you've run out of virtual memory.

If you have a mother load of memory, say 2GB, i can assure you, you can turn the pagefill completley off, assuming your not running anything else thats gonna suck it up.

If you only have 1GB, I would leave the pagefile to system managed, open your taskmanaer, start bf2 and enter a 64 player map thats full, preferably daging oil fields or fushe pass, they are mothers of maps, very intensive.

Then alt-tab to desktop, look at the taskmanager under performance tab & make a note of the "peak" at bottom left of window. this figure is in KB. so 1200000 would be 1.2GB roughly.

So if your peak figure is 1.2GB like mine is, and you only have 1GB of physical memory, then you can set a manual page file of say 200MB, but thats cutting it fine, best set it to 300MB so u got some spare.

I know that sounds a bit long winded, but its not really that hard.

Does anybody actually understand what ive just said?

Yes I do. Ive hit as high 1.3GB with paging file. But i'll take ur advice and set it to 300MB.
