So my other post about why it was pointless to be commander in infantry only mode has now been made invalid. How could I have missed out on the fun that is dropping supplies on unsuspecting enemies?? I've been playing commander a lot lately and I now have a use for those previously useless supply drops.
Quick tip on how to do it, at least on Karkand. The supplies don't drop directly down. They tend to drift a bit. In Karkand (I don't know if it varies for other maps), the supplies will float a bit north, and a tiny bit west. My way of estimating how far they will move is to just use my thumbnail. I'll put it up to the screen, place the enemy at the tip, and the supply drop at the base and about 75% of the time, it'll land where I want it.
When you find the enemy you want to squish, zoom into the closest camera mode, and click on him to center the camera on the troop. It will feel like the camera is off center, but that's fine, this is all compensated for that. You'll see the supplies appear once you click on drop, and they'll feel like they are too far right, but that's just the camera angle. If you're lucky, you'll get the squash, it's so satisfying. If not, make a note of how far off you were to compensate next time.
If the enemy is on a roof, or higher up, the supply drop might drift a little bit less so trial and error works here. Try clicking a bit closer if you're up on a really high roof. Not too much though, maybe .1 in or so. You'll find that for most cases though, the same distance works consistently.
Finally, how to avoid getting supplytilleried. It's actually quite simple. You know how you get those icons telling you where supplies are on your 3d map? Ok well when there is a supply box about to fall on your head, the distance will read between 1-3 meters. If you ever see supplies anywhere within that distance, odds are, they are about to land on your head.
I think it goes without saying that you just stand up and move a bit and you're safe from getting squashed after that, right?
Word of caution... I was just on a server and a noob admin got all pissy about me dropping supplies on his team. 75th something or other, I'll get the name later. I have never seen "Don't drop supplies on enemies" in server rules before so I felt like I shouldn't have to stop, but the admin did warn me about it so I stopped. He pissed me off enough with his demeanor though that I wanted to push his buttons so I started asking questions like "What am I supposed to do with supplies if I can't drop them on enemies then?". Or "Why should I stop if it's not written in the server rules?". Oddly enough, my team found it funny, while their team didn't.
With two tix left, 70 commander points, and 20 tickets up, I joked "Will someone stand still for a second so I can drop some supplies on them?". And what do you know, BANNED from the server, and didn't get my 2x. I'm not gonna pretend like I didn't deserve to get kicked or anything since my intentions were to annoy that douchetard, but still, how pissy can you get? Gotta love server admins.
So yes, odds are admins on the enemy team will get mad at you, but oh how fun it is to drop supplies on all the snipers that camp/plague infantry only servers. Oh and at enemy commanders too.
