Audio card isnt really nessacary unless you want good quality audio, most motherboards have audio onboard nowadays, and its pretty good.

Same for video, if you not planning on gaming or graphic intensive work, youd be fine with onboard, however investing in a lowend card(if you not planning what i previously said) wouldnt hurt either.  Also, networking is also built into the motherboards, so no need for one unless your on a wireless network.

Also, a power supply is key, without one youll have a box of parts.

im not an idiot that was a flat out givin of what i need so i didnt add it for the sake of it being completely obvious. I have copies of bf2, and i hate 2142. Monitor keyboard and mouse, i have extras.

Are you just asking what you need or do you want us to spec one out for you?

Give me a budget and I'll find you the best performance for the price!

What does a hintsink do and where does it go on the mobo?

My necessary things-

At least 2.0ghz
at least a gig of ram
Ability to run Resident Evil 3 Nemisis, Command and Conquer Games, and world of warcraft/guild wars.

I figure i could get a crappy dell that can do that for 600, so what i can i do for an uncrappy custom one?

Anytime, just did one for you, came up with 5 pages and 200 post's of "New computer, what should I get".

I am sure you can find an answer within there somewhere.

Buy a Motherboard that has potential to be useful for a while and cane be upgraded. Get a Mobo that has ATI crossfire or NVidia SLi capabilites. Buy a Video card that can be linked to a second video card at a later date.  Its better to have the opportunity and not use it than want it and not have the capabilities.

Dual core processer too.  Not much use in the dual core field yet, but there is a reason it was made....

Fairly high watt power supply.  Gonna need a monitor. go with a good CRT if you don't move your computer much and have plenty space. LCD monitors are sweet. but A CRT is fine.

Most of all: RESEARCH YOUR PURCHASES!  compatible RAM. AMD or INTEL with the right motherboard. the right RAM for the right motherboard.  I built my own and bought some rather costly RAM and like an ass i boguht the wrong kind. RESEARCH RESEARCH RESEARCH. try Newegg.com. that's where I bought all my parts. damn reliable iste.

EDIT: iste? that means site...

Heatsink sits on top of the processor and it cools the processor.

If your budget is 600 then I don't think you can get a Conroe, but its not like you absolutely need one to game.

AMD 3800+ X2 (65W) AM2 - $160

or AMD 3600+ AM2 - $95

Biostar TFORCE4 (AM2) - $73

Cheapest DDR2 2GB package you can find, doesn't need heatspreaders, DDR2 533 is fine - $180

7600GT can be found after rebate for $115

XClio 500W Goodpower - $50 http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.a … 6817189005

Case is really your preference but for it I would go with the Cooler Master Centurion 5 - $45

CD/DVD Rom is your choice really...they are all pretty much standard - $30

The 3800 X2 is dual core with each core at 2.0ghz and the 3600+ is single core clocked at 2.0ghz...the dual core will be better performance overall but the single core will be fine for now. You can always upgrade it later. Your choice.

$600 is a tight budget...better off just buying a PS3 for that money!
