I don't know what that particular error is, but your friend is smoking something. you don't need to install all the patches, just the last one. So, install BF2. If you have BF2:SF install that next. Then install patch 1.12.

If you still get the error, make sure everything on your PC is up to date: chipset drivers, video drivers, DirectX9.0c, audio drivers. I would uninstall the game and start from scratch if I were you.

The name for error 5009 is "ERROR_CANT_EVICT_ACTIVE_NODE"
and explanation is :
A cluster node cannot be evicted from the cluster unless the node is down or it is the last node.

There could be two actual reasons for the error :

Case 1. The installer tries to read a registry key and you don't have rights to do that
Case 2. Some component of the COM system has not been installed or you do not have rights to use that component

Solutions :

case 1.
You have to find the key, which the installer tries to read, from registry and enable ALL rights for your profile to use that file.
!!!! Even if you are logged in with ADMIN-rights does NOT give all rights for all files !!!!
You have to enable them manually.

It is also possible that you have WRONG path for some registry key. For example (could be real case..):
the path for the key should be like  "HKLM/Software/Electronic Arts" but instead there is "HKLM/Electronic Arts"
The error is that THERE CAN BE NO KEYS IN HKLM. They must be at the sublevel --> HKLM/Software
This picture shows what I have in registry for BF2 and BF2:SF
http://koti.mbnet.fi/kingbolt/EA.jpg
As you can see, they are at right place --> "HKLM/Software/Electronic Arts......."
Try searching those from your registry and delete all. Install BF2 again only after all keys are removed.
Straigth after that install 1.12 update. Should work...

case 2.
If some COM component has been disabled from "services", the installer fails to start INSTALL itself. That's because the COM component handles install procedure. So you have to enable (automatic) the disabled part of COM.
I have had problem with this kind of situation and took a while to find what I had disabled (as an experiment..) and forgotten to re-enable...

If those does not help then it might be necessary to re-install the OS or make a new profile to current OS.

Or do some acrobatics and praying + alchemy....

EDIT: There are couple more possible explanations and solutions for that error, like this :

On each run the setup creates a directory below the user's %TEMP% directory and copies several files to this dir. One of them is setup.inx. If this fails (e.g. disk full or installation CD damaged) this error can occur.

Possible solution is to delete everything below %temp% to cleanup the temp directory and free some disk space.

Don't give up !

Take your CD back to reseller and demand a new one. That CD must be the reason.

Dude this is a copy of your second post listing what went wrong and what u did!...i recall someone saying DONT INSTALL ANY OF THE PATCHES EXCEPT 1.12...ok patch 1.01 or whaever will auto install cos its on the spec force disk but just install BF2 and nothing else, then install BFsf then install patch 1.12 and nothing else!!!  ive had problems with the game and unistalled, re-installed etc and found it works just fine with only the 1.12 patch. this might sound silly but have u cleaned ur cd player? or checked the disk for dirt, scratches etc. sometimes its the simple things that cause probs...u might want to download the 1.12 patch again cos that might be corrupt it happens!!

I dont know how to fix this error or anything like that. I personally think its a registry problem I get the same type of error when i try to uninstall GTA 2 from one of my systems. I still havent figured out how to get it off there.

Yes. It is a registry problem. I also wrote one possible way to fix that. (post number 10, this topic)

hahah sorry for your issues man, no way i would try it 12 times , 4 maybe 5 , then woooooosh re install windows.  Life is too short  haha much easier to just wipe it clean and start over and if that doesnt do it take the disc back.
