Can someone give me a detailed explanation on precisely what the CPU has an impact on in-game?
I cant run all high or even all medium on 64 man servers without my FPS hitting 30 in combat. Even all low settings can hit 30FPS in ridiculously intense combat.

MY CPU is an AMD 64 3000+ 2GHz. It fares alright on  16 and 32 man servers, but I really enjoy the larger servers like the Insomnia servers or Legion @ War. I have to play practically all low to play on them though w/ geometry and effects being the exception.

I know my x800xl is being bottlenecked like hell, because its averaging the same performance my 9800pro did. Its not faulty because my other games run fine maxed out, CoD2 runs maxed 4x AA 8x AF.

I thought it was a heat issue, so I cleaned my case, and temps are lower, but performance didnt change.
I have all drivers updated...

I do have a 350W Antec PSU, but everythig seems fine. 15 amps on 12v rail.

SO is this a CPU problem? Lack of RAM? PSU?

I got a a 9550, (OLD), and a socket A athlon 2600+ at 1.9ghz, and I get an average fps of 50, down to 25-30 in intense combat. So it could be your cpu. Try leaving ur effects on low, see what happens to ur fps.

CPUs don't have much of an effect on the FPS in BF2.  How much RAM do you have?  Does your PSU meet the minimum specs for your card, as listed on the box?

Which probably means RAM, not proc. 2 gb is best for bf2.

The box my x800xl came doesnt list PSU requirments...i'll check newegg...normally they have the PSU requirments listed.

UPDATE- newegg says this- A 350w power supply or greater is recommended
Thats it.

thats probs not it. having a too small psu can cause all sorts of weird pc problems from corruption to bsod's to the pc just not working, but not low performance on big servers. my bet would be too little ram. check your taskmanager if bf2 maxes out your ram during game, also check if your cpu is being stressed to bad. might want to try some ocing (i find that A64's should be at least @ 2.3 GHz in order to run bf2 maxed efficiently)
once upon a midnight dreary, while i pron surfed, weak and weary, over many a strange and spurious site of ' hot  xxx galore'. While i clicked my fav'rite bookmark, suddenly there came a warning, and my heart was filled with mourning, mourning for my dear amour, " 'Tis not possible!", i muttered, " give me back my free hardcore!"..... quoth the server, 404.

Alright Max, I checked Task Manager after playing 2 rounds of Wake Island, and RAM useage was over the available free RAM I have. I started BF2 with 760MB free, and RAM usage was at 1.1GB. So until I get more RAM, 16 and 32 man player servers it is!

CPU usage was at about 20-25% average.

Settings- Medium-Low 1024x768 (All medium w/ dyn lighting & shadows on Low)

Ive just got my new laptop with Core Duo 2. I can happily tell you that without RAM and a good graphics card this means jack shit! and that is why im returning this pile of crap so called gaming laptop.

C:\WINDOWS\Prefetch

Go there and delete all the files in that folder and you'll find you will have more free RAM space. Windows preloads programs into your RAM so they will start faster when you open them. You need to do this every once in a while, say each month.

Also get another gig of ram, you will notice the diffrence between 1 and 2 gig.

Wow PC3200 RAM prices are expensive. Cheapest on newegg is $211.
I am looking at 2x1GB though sinnce my mobo only has 2 RAM slots, but $211 seems expensive.
Patriot Signature series is looking good right now. Maybe i'll order it.

I have 1 Gb and get 45-60 FPS on Mid/High at 1280x1024.  Although 2 Gb would be better, I don't think that's the problem.

Don't buy cheap RAM. 1 gig of quality RAM will performe better then 2 gigs of cheap shit.

Do you reasearch, ask around (Or search) for the "Best" RAM for you.

RAM prices got shot to hell when Core 2 Duo came out...

They should drop once supply meets up with demand.

Oh and 2GB is definitely needed in our day & age!
